But don’t the end caps for PVC fit over the pipe? I’m looking for a smooth fit. Perhaps something like this, though not as pointed…

Make a wooden plug…sand it down…thats what I used on the two tanks I started scratchbuilding…
Bruce,
Yes, it does fit down over the outside of the pipe…
Cut the sides that slip over the pipe down, so you have a workable height to cut the piece to the round requirements that you would need…
only way I know how to do it…
or, you can get an end cap, and 2 or 3 (depending on how tall you want it), straight pipe connectors, and glue them together… A small piece of pipe, inside the connectors to keep them straight…
You can also use plastic sheet. Put it over the end of the pipe you are going to use for the tank, heat with a heat lamp or heat gun. It will sag down into the pipe. Control the heat to control the sag. Once it cools, cut out the “end” section, turn it over and you have a convex roof. Used that a number of times on projects.

An overhead shot, left to right: AMS, Big Hauler, Spectrum, PNG Gramps(http://www.lscdata.com/users/thejoat/RollingStock/TankCars/IMG_5696.JPG)
The Big Hauler isn’t very much smaller than the AMS. Ric had some good shots showing the comparisons after he modified his to be a wider flat car. I’m not keen on the smaller dome, but it doesn’t look bad at all.
Bruce, I’ve tried to figure this out for a while, but have not yet been able to get my hands on the Bachmann Spectrum cars…you have supplied answers for my size questions. I know the PNG cars are the same as my 3 Foot versions, so I know the Bachmans will blend in without a hitch; not to mention be waaaaaay more affordable! Thanks!
