Taller cliffs for the In-ko-pah RR

Hell of a model railroader, though.
OUTDOOR RAILROAD at that! :)

Fantastic work is the only expression that does justice to what you have built. But, my back hurts just looking at it. Now that I turned 70 I just have to settle for level elevated platforms in my back yard.

Big John

Absolutely marvelous.

Where do you get the stone? Do you go out on rock collecting missions? I know you mentioned mortar, but I really don’t see much of it. What type do you use?

Bruce, most of the rock came from a place about 25 miles east of here. The more colorful rocks came from the desert – we own some property out there.

Oh, and the mortar is there, but the rocks are pieced together such that very little of the mortar is exposed. The mortar is also tinted using concrete pigments, which also helps.

Another update on the cliffs project… I’ve made a lot of progress in the past few days. In the newest area, I’ve extended a wide band of pink and red rocks, plus another quartz vein and a thin, short vein of dark rocks. Also built up a new mountain peak.

New pics start here:

I’ll soon be coming to the end of major work for this project. Once the major work is done, then I’ll just have to do some detail work – filling in some gaps between large rocks along the lower portion of the cliffs, adding some more talus, etc.

I’ll be very interested in how you hold the “talus” in place.

Great work Ray like the canyon. Nice detail.

The cliff rebuild is finished! (Well, mostly…) Here are some “before” and “after” photos: BEFORE:

I still have to do a few minor things, but that will have to wait until after we host our GR club meeting on Saturday. This project turned out so nicely, I’ve decided to touch up the west end of the cliffs as well. “Phase Two” won’t be such a big project, there are just a couple small areas that need work.

Amazing work Ray. Thanks for sharing

Impressive.

Where do you stand?

I’m having a tough time determining who is more disturbed…You or Chandler?
Amazing!!

So far I’ve only tried this in a few places, but what I did was mix together dirt, small rocks, and colored mortar. Then I slopped it into position, shaped it a bit by hand, and rinsed away some of the mortar to bring out the rocks. Here’s a photo of one small patch:

There's a narrow gravel path in front of the layout, and another pathway along the upper track level. The upper path is designed to be hidden when the layout is viewed from the front.

Next time I’m out there visiting my brother, I definitely got to make a stop to see this…

That looks really good.

That is a RR I need to see first hand. Great work.

Thanks! We’re always happy to have visitors, so if any of you are going to be in the area, let me know and we’ll try to work something out.

Nice work Ray. Everything you touch comes out amazing. We should clone Bruce and you.

Maybe Ray, but one Bruce is enough :o
