Those look really great, sorta like little Monopoly Game pieces
What material did you use on the Cricut , Smart Vinyl?

Thanks Rick, and yeah, Monopoly is indeed what keeps coming to mind… Or F-scale buildings in F-scale…
I keep having a nagging thought that I should have used vinyl, maybe that would have printed more crisply.
But I’m using a paper-based, laser-print, full sheet label with very good adhesive (Avery 5165), in case I want to whether them with the rest of the building, and to accept the spray topcoat. At least during testing, all that seemed to work ok.
The end result remains to be seen though. And at that point I’ll lie to myself and say “Yep, that’s what I intended all along.”
I think you made the right choice printing on paper. Unless you have a solvent printer and a way to laminate, print on vinyl doesn’t wear well and might run when you clear coat. Looks fine for the intended purpose.
Were you proposing laser print on vinyl? That could get messy going through the fuser
Thanks Jon. Schedule-wise, I kinda have to plow forward with what I have, if possible, so I’m glad of your paper vote.
Inkjet may have been superior, whether paper or vinyl… I’ve never done laser on vinyl, but we only have a laser color printer, so that’s why I mentioned it.
Onward and sideways,
Cliff
Probably a good thing. Think hot rollers melting the vinyl into a gooey mess as it tries to go through…
Make sure you post pics if you give it a go.
Cheers
Neil
FWIW, on the lasered vinyl sticker front, this is the sort of thing I had in mind.
But that’s water under the bridge at this point, so I’m moving on. I assembled the buildings this weekend (between lots of other house-related mandatory stuff). Also added chimneys and stacks.
Each of these buildings were present on site between 1885 and ~1915, and there’s research behind them all, to at least some degree. but I won’t bore you with their details. Only a couple remain.
Next step is touchup painting, then window and door application. Between work travel and family activities, that will have to wait a week at least.
Cliff
I tell you monopoly can’t be ignored but it seriously looks like a G scale ride on layout.
I am amazed at how well the tiny details are coming out.
Looks fantastic Cliff
Don’t forget the cable tethering on the Mansion House!
You bet Rooster! With your eagle-chicken eye, you pointed those out, as did a leading historian there on site. So of course I must! Yesterday I drilled 4 holes (2 on the south side, 2 on the west) in the mansion for the cables, and will install the cables and their ground-anchors during final assembly… maybe 3 months from now, not sure.
See above; I forgot to hit Reply
More delays on getting back to the Sutro tunnel this weekend, namely 1. hosting yesterday a neighborhood yarn, wine and trains party, and 2. re-organizing the garage after it was emptied for sheetrock work and floor painting by a contractor.
The highlight of the party for me was (for the first time) handing the remote to a kid and, after a small bit of explanation, letting him or her go to town. Not a huge turnout, but 3 kids had fun doing this.
For the yarn aspect, Linda had her store open, and use the wine & trains to promote knitting friends to come and buy (which they did).
More later, gotta go
Yeah, it’s really cool. I find it interesting that it wasn’t that long ago that everyone seemed to have a trainset so the kid / family with the game console was cool. Now it is the opposite!
Eric
Yes indeed!!
This was my first time handing over the remote (to anyone), and the kids were so careful and into it that my sense was, if something breaks, who cares, this was worth it. For them, and maybe mainly for me.
And of course, they didn’t break anything at all. Very respectful of me and the equipment.
On a related front, at a recent fundraising bash out on site, a new and special beer was introduced:
Great minds and all that, Rooster.
And, after some inquiry as an official “Friend” of the operation who wasn’t able to attend, I’m just informed that I can purchase some samples of said ale for shipment… More to come…
I had to laugh as I read further down. ‘Having a yarn’ down under is having a talk fest, fitted perfectly. Then I clicked it was actual yarn.
Nice getting the kids involved, I’m under constant questioning by my 13 yr old when she can bring friends over to play with the trains.
Cheers
Neil
Don’t dally too long! I have only the MIK left to bind the full crew to the railroad!
Now is the time! First time, have your daughter run the trains for her friends. As a scout leader, I understand some kids may not have the respect of other people’s property. This would give you a chance to evaluate the friends’ behavior. A promise the friends could run the trains next time after instruction, would also, most likely, filter out any kids that were not accustomed to listening and following instruction.
I’ve just gotta get something built Eric! Last layout was running when she was 3 and she still remembers it.
Two more public holiday weekends before mid winter to have a good lash at it.
Cheers
