Styrene

You guys do know you are in the brain cell sacrificing relay races with some of this stuff, right?
Yes Ric, we know. It's all a matter of how much you started with that allows you to consider certain industrial strength substances. BTW the handicap race started in the 60s, at least if I'm to believe some of the LSCers ("If you remember the 60s, you weren't there") and since I wasn't there - as in "that loony crowd" - I'm quite happy to use M-E-K for the intended purpose. ;) :)

Ahhh,
Nothin link the scent of a freshly glued and painted model…

Yeah... I guess! The back fo the Testors Model Master says:

Guys, I think TimmyD is in trouble - one of the first signs of the snuff impacting your gell being is that effects your speling.

Tim - get outside and breath large quantities of flesh air.

Oh my God, its contagious through a confuser scleen.

Acetone does a good job of welding styrene together, too.
Steve, I tried it as weld, but it dried to damn fast to do a good job. Haven't tried laq thinner. But I love Ambroid and Tanax. What ever blows your dress, I mean kilt up........................:) :)
jb, yer just gettin' old and slow.

I once had a small bottle of acetone that I would drop scrap styrene into.
The idea was to make a thicker glue from the melted styrene.
It worked a little, but the styrene goop was too thick.
I gotta get the recipe fine tuned.

Super glue works too
Richard, do you get long lasting joints with Super Glue? I find it crystalizing and letting go after awhile.
You must be using too much glue for it to crystalize. A good super glue joint is tight, no gaps. Then it works best. In fact I have actually stretched styrene pieces trying to pull a joint apart. But with the following caveat. The joint was tight, and had at least 1/8 square inches of surface contact. A joint with gaps will snap apart easily and you will see crystals of super glue residue. So, if you're not planing on using it to fill bad joints, it is fast and effective and I have ship models that I have built that are 10 years old with super glued joints that are still holding up just fine.

John,
I like your idea with the acetone. Let me know the proportions once you have worked them out. That would make an excellent fill.

Yes Ric, just loverly.   What are the chances that label was printed in China and TimmyD quoted verbatim??

Eventilation: (n) 1. Feeling of elation brought on by a specific event.
2. The act of letting the air out of an event.

Thank you all–this is a very useful thread. I’ve been experimenting with various glues and I’m not all that happy with any of them, got some laquer thinner to try this afternoon

I love the smell of MEKin the morning…
