stripping

I use 95% ethyl alcohol:

I put the car body in the alcohol, and I put the alcohol in my body too as a backup plan.

If the paint does not come off, I use more… eventually either the paint comes off or I don’t care anyway, success either way.

Finally worthwhile practical advice from Greg (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

RE. Brake fluid. Keep in mind folks that there are new formulations of brake fluid that may or may not act the same. There is more and more pushes toward water based and biodegradable formulations that will most likely not have the same components as the old fashion DOT2, and DOT 3 we are used to using for stripping, not to mention these older formulations are getting more difficult to purchase.

Yep, the fact that the lettering started to grey was a sign that it was working. Black and grey take the longest to strip. But, never had anything that 24-48 hours if soak wouldn’t remove. Heck, even the HO guys swear by 91% for the tough Kato paint.

Craig: ? to you, I have allowed a car to soak for 24 hrs and it has loosen the paint but in order to remove you have to sort of scrap with your finger nail, comes off easy then, ? is if I let it soak longer will it fall off or will I still need to be ruff with it, Thanks for you help, Bill

Bill,

I normally scrub it off with a old toothbrush. The big pieces should fall off with a light touch, but corners, detail areas need some brushing, or a longer soak.

Normally what I do is a 24 hour soak, brush the big flakes off, filter the alcohol, and then resoak the detail bits/corners, etc with cleaner alcohol. Rinse with water.

These cars have some of bad ass paint on them, car has been soaking 48 hrs in 90/10 alcohol and the side that has most of the paint off was removed after soaking with my fingernail as a stiff brush wouldn’t touch it, the other side my nail wouldn’t even touch it so back to the soak

Wow that is some tough paint! I’ve yet to see anything like that after 24 hours with 91%. 70% sure (that stuff sucks for stripping paint).

If you can find 99%, try that. Or I’ve heard cheap vodka works too? (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

It’s time for a belt sander! (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

I was thinking of sand blasting

Maybe I should look into some of that 150 proof moon shine

What Greg suggested is 190 proof! (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Well thread is over found my solution, when I had tried my trusty “purple power” in the past I had usually put soaked cotton balls on what I was removing and it worked in a short period of time but this time being as the area was so large I used a paper towel and my thinking is it didn’t keep the liquid against the car body. I just put the car in a small tub and added enough purple power to cover it and this is the results in about 25 minutes, the black was a little tougher than the yellow as the yellow just washed off and the black would probably followed had I left it but I was in to big a hurry to was it off and took a brush to it, all gone. at least some of us have some good stuff to drink, thanks for everyone’s help, Bill

To my knowledge no liquor sold in California can exceed 151 proof (75.5%). Most sites that I’ve looked at for “high test” Everclear will not ship to California. Sad since I used it to make Limoncello. Must now use the “low test” version, not quite the same.
