Large Scale Central

Steel Rotary Gons

I keep being tempted with Burl’s working draft gear… Do I make the slow plunge and equip everything with working draft gear and his couplers or be satisfied with Kadee. Right now the truck mounted stuff isn’t cutting it.

Very nicely done, Shane. Looks like something I would have tried to build back when I was modeling in the (relatively) modern era.

Cheers,

Matt

Craig, that’s a hard choice. I already have about 40 pieces of equipment upgraded to body mounted Kadees, so that will be the norm on my empire. If I get around to some show case cars, such as a depressed super flat and a Pointe St. Charles caboose, I’ll definitely be looking to use Burl’s parts. I can justify extra costs for special cars. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)For all this boring generic stuff, I’ll stick with the Kadees.

This project is my first using Kadee trucks, and I really like them.

Shane

Shane,

I think your right. For my operating equipment I think the standard Kadee will slowly be the norm. But what I am doing is mounting them in Burl’s draft gear that I made from his 3D print. Since I’m still in layout construction mode I can build some test cars (72’ centerbeams will the the longest cars) with tracks and scale draft gear to see how tight/broad of curves I can use with scale draft gear.

Very nice car Shane , looking forwad to seeing the end result .

Thanks Mike. Hopefully this one will see the paint shop in the next few weeks. I’m still waiting for the trucks to arrive for the other six cars.

I filled the aluminum channel with 38 stainless steel ball bearings, so these cars will make some noise when in use. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

Shane

So this car has balls ?

Yes Sean, but they are neither big, nor brass. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

They are 7/16" which allows a little side to side movement, and I left a half inch of space to allow for end to end movement. They also add a half pound to the weight of the car, so they are dual purpose.

Shane

Just curiosity here Shane, but I usually epoxy the BB’s in to eliminate the movement. Your train of thought on allowing them to float ? Thank You.

David, I really want my trains to make noise when in motion. When they go over a switch, or rough spot, I want to hear something.

When you weather them real heavy, that will add to the derelict idea !

Good idea , I would like to hear it rolling over switches and rail gaps.

Derelict… Sean, I couldn’t treat my cars that way. They’re not derelict until they are sold into scrap metal service. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Mike, when the rest of my trucks arrive, I’ll try to do a test “noise” video.

Shane

Shane I thank you for that reasoning. I like the result

I just got a new toy that punches 3/16 to 1 1/4" circles. I needed 5/8" for my air reservoirs. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)Now, back to work. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-yell.gif)

Shane

It’s always exciting to get new tools !

Yes, you can never have too many tools. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

First car wearing black paint. There are still a few white spots showing. I may have to get some of them by hand.

NICE work!
