States look to Internet taxes to close budget gaps

All I can imagine from California's new stance is the loss of sales from California will kill off a whole lot of bisuness. Some brick-and-mortar depend on internet sales to keep the doors open.....and even with shipping, folks would order. Add in California taxes, folks are going to go elsewhere, the brick and mortar can't keep going, close business, employees on unemployment, no more revenue for the state.....
One begins to wonder if that is not the goal they desire. "Let's kill off all businesses, force everyone on the dole, then remake America in our image."

The only problems is… “Sooner or later, you run out of other people’s money.” Maggie Thatcher

Sacramento AND Washington, D.C. are both cut from the same cloth…tax and spend, tax and spend!

Gary, right now hasn't it been spend and then try to tax?

You might be right there.

If average people would just OBEY the state laws and pay the use tax they OWE, then the states wouldn’t be hurting as bad… or hunting for ways to collect it…

Again, the tax money IS owed, period. Amazon’s problem is that 1. they don’t want to have to do all that paperwork. And 2. They figure the cheap Cali residents will switch to their competition.

As for the ‘tax and spend’ comments, and those who are mad because the states are trying to collect THEIR money… Don’t drive on public streets or highways. Don’t fly. Don’t use the library. Don’t take your kids to a park, or to see fireworks. Don’t rely upon the fire department, or police. Don’t use ANY service provided by a state university or educational extension. Don’t ever get hurt or ill or old. Don’t get downsized. Take your chances with un-inspected foodstuffs and other products. Trust your savings to people who may take it and run. Don’t complain about smog in your air or crap in your water. – or maybe just don’t be such an idiot.

Mik,

This is getting political, and Bob is a hairs breadth away from stepping in.

The services you mentioned are the ones that we rightly expect the state to provide. And that we willingly pay taxes for.

It’s all the other crap the pols spend money on to buy your vote that most of us object to.

Read my sig line…

Steve - I’m NOT being ‘political’. I’m stating a simple truth. Where IS the difference between “skirting” or outright ignoring the law to get out of paying tax rightfully owed and someone stealing something out of somebody’s house? Both are a form of theft. Also, my vote isn’t ‘bought’, BOTH sides usually smell like 3 day old dead halibut in the sun. And it’s too often like trying to pick between being hung or lethal injection, anymore. (Since my longtime party of choice has been hijacked by the nutjob fringe, I think I can admit I disagree with them… and maybe even poke fun at them.) As for the rest, your or my “important service” is ALWAYS going to be somebody else’ “pork”, and vice-versa - The C&TSRR anyone? Operation Lifesaver perhaps? Maybe Steamtown? Online public archives of vintage photos and rail related files?

hehe

That’s pretty good.

Nothing surprises me about the People’s Republic of Californistan. Of course, Illinois is following hard after them.
