How is the paint adhesion on the stuff you’ve printed?

Took the paint well I think, the real test will be the real coat of paint ina few days

Hey I have family in Sparta Tenn, know any Fayettes there?

Can’t say the name rings a bell. What part of the county do they live in?

Printed a slightly smaller car to haul my existing mixed scale trailers that will not fit on the 53 footers, still need to print 7 pieces for this set

Forgot to say, only had to edit/modify 2 of the pieces to accomplish this rebuild from the original files

edit

and to add those changes took about a half hour to edit

Mark, nice job on them…

I think they are looking great!

Thats amazing how these 3D printers work. Possibilities are endless . I was just wondering how the material used holds up to repeated stresses like bending and twisting . If you tried to bend it would it just snap like some of the 2 part urethanes out there? How will it hold up in the hot sun ? Will it get soft ? I know from casting some gondola cars a while back that some material is not the best for outdoor railroading.

I think you will find they will heat warp, since he already has some warped parts that did it while cooling.

But, maybe he’ll leave some in a closed parked car to test.

Greg

Mike the layers alternate on 45deg passes to build up the models, they are very strong that way. The test will be summer temps, if that ever happens here in the great northeast, I have left out the mine cars i have done, in full sun on a marble bench, unpainted to see how well they do long term.

Running the cars ( on MY partly shaded layout) I doubt there will be any melting issues, the plastic gets soft around 160f (melts in the extruder at 200c) However cooling should occur with movement. It rarely gets to be 100d here in Cenral NY, haven’t taken the temp of inside an engine or boxcar here though.

Greg, most of the warping is due to rapid cooling of the pla by the fan on the extruder and the extremly hot pla coming out of the extruder at 200c, the plastic is cooled to touch before the platform lowers upon completion at room temp

Almost complete second smaller size set

Thanks Mark, so can you find a way to slow the fan? Or the speed at critical points to allow to cool better.

I’m sure that some of this is built in so no one gets burned, but it’s kind of a pisser if the machine itself helps cause the warping.

Thanks for the clarification.

Greg

There are tons of variables in speed of, the extruser, it’s travel speed, fan speeds, there are also mods for fan designs, second fans.

When I get my scratch built 3d printer built I can mess with the settings more then I can now to figure out better prints

Leaving one set outside with trailers on them to see what the sun might do to them btw

Mark said “extruser”

I’m telling mom

Surprised Friar Fred didn’t jump down my throat for that spellun er-or. lol

Weight testing the 3 car set outside for the rest of the summer

Left is the original, middle was v2 and v3 should hold up to anything trown at it

Left is the beefed u v2 , original is the white

The main reason for the bigger beefed up is actually for tracking on tight curves not just weight of the plastic
