Sound Cam Question

OK, here's the math:

Model track gauge of 45mm ÷ 25.4=1.772"

Prototype standard gauge of 56.5" ÷ 1.772"=31.891 scale ratio

That is 99.67% of 32, or a scaling error of only 0.3%! In my view, this is pretty “. . . true to gauge/scale”, but I usually gauge things by the ‘10 foot rule’. LOL!

1:32 is just a bit bigger than O scale. . .
1:32 scale is exactly 1.5 times larger in linear dimension and 3.375 times larger in volume as compared to 1:48 scale. This makes a 40' boxcar ~10" long in 1:48 and 15" long in 1:32 scale. Again, I think that is more than ". . . just a bit bigger . . .".

Just my opinions. Your mileage (and scale accuracies) may vary!

With 1:29 you have a narrow gauge, sort of.

With 1:32 you have a wide gauge, sort of.

Now matter how you slice it, neither is true to gauge/scale. Do the math.

1:32 is just a bit bigger than O scale, and 1:29 is 3 times bigger than HO. How’s that again? I think I missed sumpin.

Steve,

1:1 Standard Gauge track has 1435mm Gauge divide that by 32 and you arrive at 44.84mm (<45mm) which means you have an error of 0.35%!!

Oh how we wish LS manufacturers could get all the dimensional errors into that range!

Gentlemen.

Erudite comments indeed.

But where is the WOW!!! factor in all that?
You are forgetting to upsize it a bit so the punters think they are getting more for their money.
Don’t you be worried by scale boyo. Look how BIG it is.

More or less like an old Brit sitcom. “Never mind the quality - feel the width”.

Let’s see… We start with 1:32 and factor in the WOW. That scales out to 1:29…Hmmmmm.

But a certain competitor needed his WOW factor so now we have 1:27…Hmmmmm.

Now, if we continue the WOW factor…and add a little WOW to the track too…Hmmmm.

Maybe we will see standard guage done in 1:20.3…WOW.

Hi guys,

WOW!

OK, the year is 1970, I’m sitting in a Canadian hotel restaurant with a Brit visitor who works in Switzerland.

HJ: What you’re gonna have?

Brit: (looking at the menu) Errrrr… what in Heaven’s name are Jumbo Shrimp, a cross between Shrimp and an Elephant??

Yes, we need more WOW factor! A few more superlatives, please!!

HJ,
dontcha know, whatever it is it ALWAYS has to be better, newer, bigger, more attractive, more technologically advanced, cleverer, faster, slower, sillier?

…and I’m only listing toilet paper.

When you get onto Toy Trains the superlatives get even grander to sell the latest thing. Even if the thing is no better, newer, bigger… Oh, I know you get the point.

BS, Spin, call it what you like, but that is how stuff is sold.
Including how the public should think of their well being.
Never worry the hoi polloi with facts.
Baffle em with BS I say

Tony,

Yes, I know. The interesting part is: people start to believe all the crap and once they believe it they are on a mission to spread the gospel that X, Y or Z is just absolutely wonderful. They also get very upset when you mention a few flaws that are not quite as advertised. How dare you question their “religion”.

And off we go!

BTW there is a most interesting “Open Letter to the editor of the LGB Depesche” on a German forum. I haven’t checked yet how Google translates it, but I made a copy for future reference.
