Large Scale Central

So it begins, new Garden Railroad 2013

Vincent,

It came out OK. Nice.

Nice place to chill on those hot summer nights.

Nice video.

Thanks everyone.

Trying to get the hang of doing video’s.

Some are coming out better then others, also trying to find the best location!

We didn’t do a whole lot to the railroad this weekend, mostly enjoyed running a few trains and relaxing!

Started playing with a couple of the new buildings I had picked up earlier this year and figuring out where to put them.

The easy one was the water tower, it is actually glued down onto a couple of bricks so it won’t move…plus the bricks were needed to make it level.

The more difficult area will be the new station and passenger platform.

The spot where I think they will look best is also in the area where there is a bit of a drop off and the ground is very un-level to say the least!

I think I have it so it will come out looking nice when it’s finished but…I didn’t pick up enough cement bricks to get the job done today.

I need to go back to Lowes tomorrow anyway to pick up a few more benches to place around the fire pit, might as well get a couple dozen more bricks while I am there!

And this is just a cool picture from the other day after a heavy rainstorm came through.

You should pick up some of that stone mosiac from lowes and glue them along the edges of the blocks around the station. That will give it a nice scale wall look and add some detail. .

Layout is really coming to life.

Thanks Shawn, I will have to take a look into that.

Came home for lunch today and decided I would try and repaint one of my old buildings.
Seeing how this was my first attempt I didn’t want to do anything to difficult, so I selected the Aristocraft switch tower as my test subject.

I managed to unscrew the roof so I was able to take that off, but the storage box on the bottom was not coming off. The screws have pretty much rotted away, so I taped it off as best I could.

I decided to leave the windows and frames as they were, they didn’t fade half as bad as the original yellow did on the building.

Sorry, in my rush I didn’t manage to take a picture before I started, but here is the finished result!

I will just have to hand paint the hinges on the storage box to finish it off.

Turns out I did have a area where I could show what the original finish looked like.
I forgot I had to paint the back of the storage box!
So here is what the color looked like after baking outside for about 8-years.

And here is the fresh coat of paint

Up next for a re-paint is the Aristocraft barn.
It was a bright red years ago when I purchased it new…

It looks bad!

Not sure what to do with the roof, I may try the textured brown paint I used on my trestles (they came out looking decent)
The nice thing is I believe I can take this building completely apart, I tried the roof already and that came right off…so hopefully the side panels will too!
I should be able to just mask over the white trim and keep it as is, but the red will all be sprayed a bright red.
Hopefully I can start painting tomorrow.

Whats wrong with the way the roof looks now? I’ve seen guys spend hours trying to get that look…it looks like a barn man…don’t mess with it…IMHO…

Bart’s right. Leave the roof alone. It looks great. :stuck_out_tongue:

Leave the walls alone, too. They look like a nice, weathered barn. It would be hard to replicate that look.

The roof is almost white it has faded so much, when you see it in the sun light it’s not pretty.
Even the walls have a lot of white showing through them…I don’t know, I need to do something with it.

Vincent. We had the same problem from the sun fading the roof and sides. We put on coke can corrugated roof strips. Our tractor storage roof was not bad yet so left that alone for now. We have done other building with the corrugated roofs and works out well in the weather.

The paint for the buildings, I just go to Homedepot and have them made up samples jars from the color of the org. building. They can scan it for you. Outdoor Sim. Gloss or flat
Acrylics works well after cleaning up with Top Job soap and hot water.

Thanks Noel, now I can decide while I sleep on what I want to do!
I do like the look of your barn much better then mine…I think it will get painted.

Well…my decision was to paint it.
I have started with the roof using a textured spray paint, I still have the other roof section to do but I figured it would give the best before/after comparison.

I sprayed lightly from a distance (I think my leg has more paint on it then the roof) and it is letting the discoloration bleed through the finish so it has some what of a weathered look to it.
Almost like when it was bought new.

We will see how the rest of it comes out now!

Vincent,

Make a wash of India ink and alcohol, oh 1 to 10 parts or so, and brush it from top to bottom. It’ll get into all the nooks and crannies and cracks. When you have it looking the way you want, give it a clear over coat.

Vincent,

I was in agreement with the others about leaving it like it was, however I think the painted look is better. It tones down the bright white.
