Large Scale Central

So it begins, new Garden Railroad 2013

Managed to get a few more buildings out and a couple more plants/tress.
Little station and bait shop (I was told we will be fixing the section of track that is being supported by the brick next!)

Also managed to get the Saloon in along with a Sheriff’s station, cemetery, watch tower and cabin.
Planted (2) new trees next to the tower and a couple more ground cover plants.

Its really coming to life now. Looks great and I love the fire tower. You should build a small hill in the spot and put the tower on top. You need a small cabin next to the tower for the operator to stay overnight.

And a still out back next to the out house!

Yes it is FINALLY starting to come together, we are making weekly visits to the (2) local Lowe’s too see what new plantings they have gotten in.
I think this weekend we will be heading up to Brigg’s Nursery in Attleboro to find a few specialty ground covers that the DIY centers won’t have.
It’s hard trying to determine how much too buy, and how close to plant for best results!

Bring your check book…

You will come home with more than you went there for!

If your not sure, read the plant tag. They tell you how big the plant will eventually get, plus the best light and soil conditions. Ground covers can meander all over the landscape, depending on how aggressive they are.

We do read the plant tags, but with the trees we plan on keeping them dwarfed so that is where a lot of the guess work comes in on how close to plant things… guess we will find out in a few years if we guessed correctly

Hey Vincent. This weekend I’ll grab some pictures of a few Dwarf Alberta, Arborvitae and Boxwood trees that have been in the ground for quite a few years to give you an idea of how they will grow. Most all of mine began their residence here as 1 gallon size. Some are 3 foot tall now even though I keep pruning them.

That would be great, thanks Jon

One way some people do that is to plant it while it’s still in the pot. Just cut out the bottom so it has some room to grow. I’ve never tried that so I don’t know if it works or not.

Ken, we plant our Dwarf Alberta Spruces that way… Works great here you can see them in the pics from our Bluestone Southern May Ops session, in the ““Operations”” area…

After getting a chance to try out the refreshed H-L-W Big John locomotive we headed up to Briggs Nursery in Attleboro MA to search for some plants.

I had a few extra bucks from last weeks pay so we donated them to plants on the railway, we picked up some of these.

And here they are freshly planted

Those Ice Plants are pretty when they bloom. Come in all kinds of colors, but I haven’t had any luck with them. They only lasted about 3 years here. Same with the Artemisia.

The Silver Mounds I never had much luck with either on my old layout, but they just look so good when they get big I had to try them again.

Looks good. Wait till everything starts to spread. Your layout will look great. Cant wait to see how everything looks by end of summer. You have to make sure you do a before and after. The Big John really looks great.

Yea, I gave up on them. There’s plenty of other stuff that does good on the layout. I was at one place last week in Lancaster Cty that had a bunch of different Ice Plant varieties and was tempted to give them another try in a different spot, sometimes that works, but decided on getting a few other things instead.

The silver mounds we have planted years ago are doing great… Maybe they just like clay soil…

Here is a little plant growth update after almost 2-months.

Most of it is moving along nicely, we have a few that may not make it but probably will not know for certain until next spring.
Wherever you see some Marigold flowers popping up, that’s do to a accident Penny had holding onto a cup of seeds…as you can tell, she didn’t hold onto the cup that well.

So the cup was half full or haft empty when she gave it to you ?

She actually tried keeping it a secret that she spilled all the seeds… until they all started popping up all over the place!
