Large Scale Central

So Cal high winds

So for knock on wood, we have only had a few small wildland fires in the last couple of days. Kinda of weird to be in a “red flag” staffing pattern in January. Hopefully we will get some march madness…

Matt, one of my favorite places to look at wind speed/gusts is the Freemont Canyon RAWS station which is near Irvine Lake. For the wildland fire agencies, this is one of our favorite weather sites to look at current conditions:

I live in the Santa Ana Canyon that the winds are named for. They can blow in excess of 60 mph. I have to bring all of my structures (>50) in before October 1 and can’t put them back out until after April 30.

We are having the backyard redone and a month ago we had a new Jacuzzi delivered that has been standing on its side next to my bedroom window. Every time the winds blow, I fear that it will get blown over and come into the bedroom at 4:00 AM. If it can survive another week, the pad should be ready.

Wow, it’s really kicking up tonight! Worst that it has been all season so far. Thank goodness the workers turned the spa from its side onto its base yesterday or I think it would be in the bedroom now.

Great, now we have a large fire happening with the high winds. This is day 5 of winds at least 40mph or higher, I was going to stop by the Whistle Stop but now that the 210 Freeway is closed in that area it will wait.

When I lived in Spring Valley, just east of Sandy Eggo, a fire started in the valley just to the east of me, and grew fast because of the “Santy Annie” winds. We were saved by the timely application of Borate by a P-2 Navy sub chaser, immediately followed by a S-2 Navy sub chaser, which was chased by a PBJ, the Navy’s version of the B-25 Mitchell. How do I know it was a PBJ, you ask? It said so on the side, in big letters.

Go Nav Air!
