Signals on the NVRY

The Finger Lake Live Steamers has a single track area on their 1" 1:12 track that might work in areas on both Bob’s and the IPP&WRR. The engineer hits a switch that gives him a green signal as he enters the trackage and that presents a red signal at the other end of the single track. When he arrives at the other end, he must turn the signal off. These switches are at each end and requires two poles for turning the signals on and two for turning them off. They stay dark when not in use.

Not certain how and where Bob would like to use them, but on the IPP&WRR, the trackage going under St. Helen’s running from Peter’s Pond to the long lead climbing to Bell might be a candidate. The new short passing siding along the back fence has alleviated some of the concern and, of course, a dispatcher controls this trackage when they are doing their job.

If the wiring was being put in, I guess you could also have it controlled from the Dispatcher’s Office, when they are in attendance, and then switched to manual operations by the engineer or operator, when a Dispatcher is not present.

I think the EBT did something like this controlling the doors to the tunnels. And think there were some pranks played that also took down the tunnel doors.

Been playing around with the cutter I got, and started making the graphics for the model board. Not too bad.

Very interesting.

Bob,

Will the Dispatcher’s Office be in the basement? After being at your place, I have a better understanding of how you may lay this out.

Nah, upstairs, room with all the windows, with a window open and a BB gun handy so nobody cheats…

Nothing like to pain of punishment to keep people in line.

Oh, that’s going to be so cool. Don’t tell AndyC. He’ll be jumpin’ and dancin’ all over the place.

BB gun? Im thinking granny’s shotgun with rock salt.

Actually, the model board, et al, will go into my shop, ln the wall thats next to the door that goes outside.

Great pic, btw, thats a few years ago.

Continuing right down the model board, I got this far this weekend.

A bit more, then I can start laying out the plug, light, and lever holes.

Bery Interestink…

Googling lightweigth Kelvar suits…

I believe that’s from the “Come-up-and-help-me-work-on-my-layout” weekend, from the looks of some of the piles of stuff.

Andy, get 2 a them…

You know I stated that about AndyC, but the one that will be yellng ouch the most, will probably be DougM. He may just give up coming.

Y’all who can make working signal systems have got more talent than I do, for sure.
I can make signals, can make control panels; but put together all the electrickery in between to create a realistically functioning system, no.

The logic that actually drives the signals the correct way is the tricky part. Operating signals are much, much different than just traffic lights. And there are lots of differences between the different kinds of signal systems. its a giant learning curve.

That easy for you to say!

But it need not be. For some people, all they want is for a signal to be red for a dead section, or occupied section, and green otherwise.

Spurs and sidings are easy to accommodate using the LGB EPL system that will change the color/position with the position of the turnout. Or, a 24 volt latching relay can throw with the turnout using the same pulse.

In other cases, it can be as simple as using an EPL/relay, reed switch, and magnet on the train to trip/release the signal.

If someone describes what they want their signals to do, we should be able to figure out a way to accommodate them.

I agree Todd , it doesn’t have to be all logic circuits . I think Bob would agree with that , but he is right about trying to use them .

Simple understandable wiring and switches can work wonders .

I think your mention of helping those who want it is a good one ; I hope it gets taken up .

Mike

I just wanted simple red/green signals to show the polarity of the main. I wired up an extra relay to do that when I built my relay control system, Someday I will build the 2 aspect signals I want and install them. Hey, I got time. Its only been 12 years since I built the railroad.,

Some work last night. Built the box for holding the model board. Its 1x poplar. Here it is, with the panel mounted, ready for Danish oil.

Next up the lever switches.

Cool…
