The M-16A1s worked okay, as long as they were kept clean. McNamara screwed up Stoner’s design. Removed the chrome lined barrel and changed the propellant to extend the range. All that did was cause the aforementioned malfunctions and cost lives.
That’s the trouble, David.
I’ve worn out more than my share of field boots, and I have yet to know anyone who went into a firefight with a “clean” rifle. Wading through the marshes and wadis will do that.
I’ll bet that Sgt Kalashnikov laughed his ass off at the idea of putting a condom over the flash suppressor in an attempt to keep the rocks and sticks out of the barrel.

I used to demonstrate my two AK-47s by stripping them down to the components parts, throwing the whole lot into the sand of the range backstop or mud when available, then putting them back together again with any kind of cleaning whatsoever.
In over twenty years of doing it, they never once failed to function perfectly.

The saying is the AR style rifles “crap where they eat”. I had one jam (one too many) and one “cook-off” malfunction after 8 months of in the field use. It certainly would not be my first pick in a SHTF situation.
Now my Mosin-Nagant 91/30, 7.62x54R, that I’d consider if I wanted reliability.
This is old, but maybe not all have seen this: AK vs. AR vs. Mosin Nagant

Mom got me a Stripped Lower in 5.56 and Complete Upper CAR kit…fitted all on Christmas Day (I had the foresight to order roll-pin starter punches)…She received a new LCP…
she and I were both happy!
WoW! Great gift from mom! What parts and assemblies are you planning to plug into the lower? Who made the lower, Colt, DPMS?
The look-alike M-16A1 I built, back when one could find parts for these tolls on ebay, had all 1960’s retro furniture and external parts, right down to a three-prong flash suppressor.
Do you have an Army FM on the rifle? I have an extra one here, if not.
The Del-Ton (NC) Kit had all lower parts…The lower is from Spikes (FL)…it’s just a 16" CAR basic/bare bones flat-top receiver 6 position stock. Have a set of flip up rear sights and detach carry handle on the way. have a few books but not that one.

I REALLY like and carry and shoot my Elsie Pea …aka Ruger LCP .380 a LOT , what a great little carry gun .
I also recently bought my first semi auto shotgun , wow , a Mossberg 930 , a great shotgun , and I now have a new respect for the firepower of a semiauto shotgun , whew .
This fall the full auto shooting match of pumkins was FANTASTIC , from water cooled , belt fed , tripod mounted Brownings to the little full auto pistols …I also have now seen full auto drum fed shotguns , oh my are they awesome firarms .
Watching the full auto machine guns go to work on hundereds of pumkins was a fun match to watch !
Ordered her the Crimson Trace 431 and Cross Breed Super Tuck holster yesterday.
I carry my PT145 daily in a Cross Breed Supertuck…an awesome ugly holster!
My Remington 1100 is sitting pretty awaiting a “tactical” re-do…I love that piece of work!
My Bullseye Shooters League is starting up again on Tuesday the 5th. It’s all indoors 4 relays @ 25 yards with NRA targets and commands. I’ll try again with my S&W 22A-S with a Red-Dot sight and modified S&W target stocks.
Maybe I can get up into the 90’s this year.
Shooting in comps with others is a great way to increase your skills and have fun .
And you find out just how good a shooter you are compared to other shooters , then strive to improve your skills .
Just got back from our New Year’s Day shoot!!! Began at 11:30 and ended just over an hour ago, giving us plenty of time to finish off all the mince pies after the loss of light stopped us pla - I mean, shooting… [burp].
I took a couple of .44 revolvers and my old Whitworth rifle and cadged some black powder from a pal - well, quite a lot, in fact, as the rifle uses 90gr for every shot I fire.
This weather really shows the smoke, I’m glad to say, and with six of us shooting muzzle loaders it was a real celebration - finishing up with a ‘feu de joie’ with nine black powder six-shooters was a hoot!
All I have to do now is to clean up my three guns - before I can eat, according to mrs tac.
Bah. Humbug.

Sounds great tac , I miss our groups every new years day gathering in a woods by a creek and with a pig or deer on an open spit over a fire , there were a lot of stories told for the truth , some small sips of some beverages , to keep away the cold , and some informal BP shooting , mostly smooth bore flintlock , some F & I war re enactors , were some of the group .
So sad that the owner of the extensive woods , and some others , have passed on now , so that new years ritual is behind us . And some new years days it was REALLY cold out there .
Nothings quite like the smell of shooting the REAL blackpowder .

Most fun I had shootin was "Gun Week" at Ft.Knox KY, during my Armor Training days. Spent the whole week firing every weapon on an M-48 tank, daytime, night time, all kinds of ammunition.............nothing like watching a 10 tanks in a row all firing their main guns at 2 in the mornin......;)
Taking my wife out today, we got a new 9mm pistol. THought I’d have her fire the .22 target pistol some first, then move to the 9mm. We had .45’s when I was in the Army and the Guard(on tanks), they got the 9mm after I retired.

You can tell it’s Mattel, it’s swell!
Taking your wife out to share the shooting fun is great , and starting with a .22 also .
Many years ago , I took my Sister to the range to let her try all the different firearms out .
Started her with the .22 rimfire pistol , then the .38 revolver , and then a .357 mag , working on up in calib , then some stiff loads for the .44 mags , she was enjoying ahooting the revolvers and then aked about the semi automatic pistols also , so being a cartridge relader , I spread a blanket / tarp , out on the ground , and asked her to stand with it to her back , and handed her a 9mm semiauto pistol , …she looked at the gun , looked at the blanket behind her , and looked at me and asked me ,
" is this going to knock me on my ass " ?
oh that was a funny time , No , I told her I wanted to catch the brass for reloading .
My wife and my sister are quite handy with firearms , and can operate them , and hit what they aim at .
We have a standing joke in our home. If a bad guy invades our home, my wife is to ask him to hold a bowling pin in front of himself, chest high. Then she can hit him every time.
I’ve taught her and all four children (now in their 20’s) how to operate a handgun and a rifle and hit what they are aiming at. When the oldest boy was getting a bit too cocky about being able to handle a gun, I brought out the Mosin-Nagant 1891 7.62x54R for him to shoot. He settled down.
