Shannon car shops Mik 2015 challange

Then I cut the bottom off the round thing, so it could be mounted on the car.

Then I made the end doors. I needed supplies to make the end doors and I found an (unwilling) volenteer.

Since the door and end walls are done, now I needed to make the side walls. They need an arc cut out of them so they mate to the round thing.

After cutting out the side walls, I glued them to the end walls, and reinforced the joint by glueing a toothpick onto the inside of the joint.

In this shot you can see that I cut the end walls so they overlap the end walls a bit.

Once teh glue has set solid, I will trim and sand off the excess.

After reinforcing the inside of the end wall/door assemblies with some cardboard supports, I test fit them to the round thing.

Oops. I didnt get the arc cut properly.

After a bit of marking and then sanding with a dremel sanding drum, and cutting the excess off the front of the side walls, I glued the assemblies to the round thing.

While waiting for the glue to dry, I started making the smoke jack. What to use for the smoke jack…

I found my collection of dry pens. They will work.

You can see that sanded the printing off the one that I am going to use. Then I cut a section out of the pen body, turned it and glued the pieces together. I aslo cut it to the aproximate length.

Today I didnt make as much progress as I wanted to. I tried priming the round thing, and then I tried spackleing the round thing, but I wasnt successful in smooting it out. Its styrofoam so I cant use any of the normal fillers that I use.

So, when I paint it, I will not use gloss paints, since the surface isnt as smooth as I wanted. It will still give the effect that I want. Here you can see the top cap is being test fitted to it.

Your transporting Frosty in sections to a better place?

If you paint it OD green it looks like a modern grenade. Red and it becomes a pomegranate. Bright yellow and “Real Lemon” comes to mind. Orange and, wellll Orange!

Other then that I don’t have a clue yet!! but you do have 7 days left.

I got it!!!

You’re making a “bobber” caboose! It’s a fishing bobber.

Nice Todd,

I think you nailed it. A true bobber caboose.

Todd and Devon, you are correct. I am going very literal here, leaf springs, brake shoes, bobber…you get the idea.

Great idea. Should be very easy to find when it plummets off the bridge into the lake. (I’ve had a couple rail cars do that.) Make sure that the shoes are machine washable.

I assume that you used “eye-beam” construction is the subframe

A “bobber” caboose! that is a FUN idea. and here I thought it was going to be a laser cannon like at the Rebel base on Hoth. Do you Star Wars fans remember that?

David in your spare time will you be making a hook with bait car and a fish following along?? LOL

I have been planning on making a true bobber for a long time. This challange got me moving on the idea. I mentioned my idea to a fellow NMRA member last summer, and he shook my hand. He really wants to see it when its done.

The thought extends even further. I want to make a (cardboard) box car, a (fish) tank car, but the critter idea to pull the train would take a bit more skill in animation than I have.

I even had the passing thought of making a reefer, but… (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Not me… All Todd

you could make a “flat fish” car using angler iron and call the whole thing the “sole” train.

Very creative and imaginative use of “literal interpretations.” Like it a lot.

Tom

Great inspiration David. The rest of the cars should be easier to get started on now.

I do like the ‘eye beam’ suggestion.

David, It may be to late, but I once use a large EPS Cone on a rocket I was building. I reshaped the cone and then wanting that plastic look I gave it several coats of elmers glue. This gave a harder shell and a surface more like the rest of the project. It also added a barier between the foam and spray paint. Love your concept here!
