maybe we ought to name the yearly build challenge after him

Actually I believe Ralph Berg started the 1st Build Challenge but perhaps we should call it "Miks build challenge " Honestly I think that would be pretty cool.

My condolences to the family.

Sounds like a nice idea Matthew. Allen and I exchanged a few emails over the years, NOT related to railroading. He will be missed. I’m sorry I never got to meet him face to face.

My prayers to Kim and the family.

Rooster,
Mik did the first build challenge. It was all his
I did the second.

It really amazed me as to how Mik was able to find those neat and obscure historic locomotive prototype photos to post on this forum.

Ironic that Mik had posted that he would ensure that his Wife knew the true value of his trains to sell after his passing.

Possibly someone on this board who lives near Mik could later assist his Widow to liquidated his trains such that his survivors are not taken advantage of.

I enjoyed the email conversations that I had with Mik. A good person who shared his modeling efforts with us despite their imperfections due to his physical handicap. Mik enjoyed and shared the hobby with all of us.

Norman

Wow, what a shock as Mik and I were always swapping pieces parts for various projects that we had going on If I had something he needed I’d ship it up and if I needed something he’d ship it to down He was a great person just to chat with and was passionate about everything he did, our condolences to his friends and family as I know he will be missed.

I think naming the build challenge after Mik would be a great idea.

OMG… WOW… What a bummer of a way to end the day… I was in touch with Mik, on the build challenge 2014. He was pleased to have the help as his daily life was over the top recently.

I never met him personally but we talked back and forth on the Challenge, swapped stuff and etc.

I will do my best to uphold the values and ideals that Sir Mik set for us.

Having passed the build challenge onto me for this year, and now this…

I, by the power passed on to me by Sir MIK, Hereby today and forever thereafter declare that all build challenges shall be known as " Miks Build Challenge"

Mik i’ll miss your help, positive attitude, and can do life goals. Thanks for all that you did for the train world, and this place we call home is a better place because of you. And now you have every part that you will need to create everything you never got around to the 1st time around.

“MIKS BUILD CHALLENGE” it shall be.

Its sad to see someone pass away so young. Our prayers and thoughts are with Kim and their family members.

a sad reminder that none of us are promised a tomorrow…Rest in Peace, Mik!

Norman,

You know there could be a possibility that his trains may be kept in the family and not liquidated.

Sorry to hear this. Prayers going out to Kim and his family. Had a few talks with him about projects and steam engines, and swapped parts for projects. He will be greatly missed! I am all in favor of “Miks Build Challenge”

Wow. What shocking news. My condolences to his family.

-Kevin.

One of the good guys in our hobby and on the boards. He’ll be missed. RIP.

got a message from Ralph, that Mik is dead.
my deepest feelings for Kim and his kids.
i just knew him by the forums, but he was my kind of guy.
i never read him bitching about prices or companies - he just made himself, what he wanted or needed.
we lost a great modeller.

I’d like to formally nominate “Mik Memorial Build Challenge” as the official name for the build.

I certainly will miss his random explosions of brilliance and ingenuity. He always managed to find something so very interesting either to model or just to discuss.

Only a few hours before Kim announced his passing, he was posting on facebook about a project he was working on.

Half of me is glad that he didn’t get stuck laying in a bed for months on end withering away in pain without the ability to DO somethign to keep his mind off his problems, but the other half regrets the pain such a sudden departure caused for all those who didn’t get a chance to say goodbye.

There are hundreds if not thousands of people’s lives that were enriched by his efforts; and we are all greatly diminshed by his passing.

Mik’s Build Challenge !

I didn’t see eye to eye with Alan on many different levels, however he was a contributor to the Large Scale Community …LSC… and had a lot of good info to share.

Only my opinion

I really liked following his builds even though I am mostly a lurker.

RIP Mik

Whoa… I just got around to checking out this end of the forum and was shocked to read this news. What a bummer. My condolences to his family and friends.

I too enjoyed immensely his builds and historical photographs. Mik will be missed. My condolences to his family and many friends.

Doc Tom

I had the opportunity to correspond with Mik thru email and the forums. Always enjoyed his creativity and ideas. I recently went to the B&O Museum in Baltimore and took some photos to share with him of the Winnans Camel and another project he had built. I agree with the Challenge being named after him, I think he would like that. Rest in Peace my friend…
