Rick's MIK 2020

Rick, that turned out to be a very nice building, not that I had any doubts. The redwood is beautiful and I still like the unevenness of the popsicle sticks, provides instant age.

Nice wood you have there! And nicely used too!

Yea, the sticks are starting to grow on me a little, I think I will give them a wash of dark stain before I paint then when I wash the paint thin we should get some old wood look showing through hopefully.

Rick, the construction is very good, and the sticks are convincing to me.

Do you have a model to imitate for your paint job? I don’t know about the dark stain. Just my thoughts, but I found some success using an ink/watered-down black stain that darkens the wood to a nice grey and let’s the warmth of the wood still show through. Then I paint, letting however much of the underpainting show through depending on what I’m after.

I’ll go find a picture which may be useful depending on the look you’re after, maybe not. Judging from your chimney you obviously know what you’re doing.

eidt: Dang it, I can’t find what I was looking for. I’ll see tomorrow.

And SLOW DOWN, will ya? You’re making us all look like slackers (uh oh, that rhymes with crackers) !

Not knowing what I am doing has never stopped me from plowing ahead(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif). I use a mixture of black leather dye and alcohol on almost everything I build. Your right about it bringing out the nice grey tones in the wood that will show through the thinned/washed paint. These “sticks” are a hardwood, probably Birch, so will not take a stain to deeply and may need more than one wash.

Thanks for the input, it is appreciated.

Day 15

Got the doors and windows built and ready for paint. The white window frames are for the inside walls to make a finished trim. Also started on the 55 gallon barrel for the stove oil that will be mounted on the back of the building.

Doors and windows all finished, painted and installed. Also all the building paint and trim is finished.

Hey, this thing is starting to wind down. Complete the roof, the oil shed/barrel, steps, hand rails and some signs and were done(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Geez if that’s what you call winding down, I need to get you over to my house to work on my build.

The pop sticks came out perfectly, I think, and the windows and doors are clean and believable.

Nice. And I agree the craft sticks look good being uneven

That is a nice looking building Rick and the choice of colours gives it that old timey look.

Day 18

Thanks for the support Guys, it is appreciated.

Not much new to show, been busy with other things last couple of days. The roof is coming along, can only do a couple rows at a time because the E6000 is really slow drying and it’s too easy to wiggle the shakes around before it sets up. Started on the switch/battery holder box that will be diguised as a shed/stove oil drum rack.

The shed and oil drum finished up and ready for final weathering, which should start in the next few days.

Thanks for following along.

Nice building.

I built a sawmill from one of those Garden Texture plans. It’s been outside close to 10 years. It has those cedar shake shingles on it. It’s finally starting to look like it’s been there for awhile. The roof is still in pretty good shape considering, though at this point I consider it an abandoned sawmill, a part of the Coal Creek Lumber Co. siding.

I agree Ken,

The only thing that realistically weathers wood is time in the weather. I have tried a couple of different stains on some test shakes for this roof but can’t come up with anything I think looks right. Any ideas put there??

Rick, cedar shakes age to a light gray/brown color naturally , test a light gray ink/alcohol wash…

Day 20,

Well this just about wraps it up for me, A couple signs, a few details, and maybe a little more weathering before final pictures.

A few finished shots.

As I said before the area where this depot will sit isn’t built yet, so I am not sure of its orientation to the tracks so I haven’t attached the steps to the building and decided to use chain in place of rails around the porch. The chain hangs on hooks and can be taken down or located to another bay as required.

And the reason for all the fuss, “The Chimney”. Decided to use the wood aging solution on the roof, same one I used on the Camp Six buildings, it darkened them a little but I think it is just going to take some sun and water to get them to the aged look.

Now I can get back to the Snow PLow and spend more time following along on everybody elses builds(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Thanks for following along as this came together(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Two bonus points awarded to Rick M… First to finish… Good Job

Dave

Nicely done, Rick! The color variation on the chimney and shakes, the cool little blue/white tank, and the uneven boards on the siding all help make it look authentic. Nifty!

Well done, Rick. I know you originally questioned the variability in the popsicle sticks but they really give the building an authentic look and the cedar shakes simply add to that authenticity. I really enjoyed watching you build this beautiful model.

Beautiful as usual Rick.

Great stuff. I’d put that on my layout any day of the week. I can’t wait to see what you do for signs.
