Large Scale Central

Rail fanning in the summer

Next was famous Morant’s Curve. An impromptu Swiss railfans gathering - at least that’s what I call it when ten (10) Swiss people congregate at the same spot at the same time, :open_mouth:  waiting for the trains to roll.

Here’s the first of three segments.

BTW some of those other people encountered a mother bear with three cubs the previous day; from their accounts it was close to a “brown pants” day. Nah, I didn’t mention that I usually just talk to the bears; the same procedure as Parks Canada was showing in a video at the Rogers Pass Centre.

A Westbound Intermodal followed.
I mentioned somewhere that I’d try to get as many shots as possible before Canadian Pacific changes too much on account of the two Americans - Bill Ackman and Hunter Harrison - fiddling with operating procedures. Like having all the power up front, instead of the standard DPU.
I guess it will take a spill like that in the Chekamus Canyon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheakamus_River_derailment) to smarten them up that the CP isn’t the CN, notwithstanding whatever the two of them think! In that accident they straight-lined a 144 car train on a steep and curvy section. Transport Canada then issued an order limiting conventional trains (non-DPUed) to 80 cars between Squamish and Clinton.

Finally an Eastbound!
This one was on hold at Lake Louise for quite some time, listening to the radio chatter is more entertaining than ever. There seemed to be a bit of confusion about sequences,  despite the line being clear i.e. there were no work orders that would delay traffic.

An interesting detail: seems like any decision needing a bit of clarification is now bumped straight up the line and then … they wait.

However it isn’t quite as bad, yet, as the one instance where a CN crew was waiting for almost half of their shift to get a decision from the higher-ups on what to do with certain cars that were in the way of their regular work.  Now, that made for extremely interesting radio traffic while I was waiting for VIA #2.

One of the shorty VIA passenger trains was waiting at Jasper for VIA #1 to arrive (transfer passengers), before that happened they moved the train to the through main, leaving the House track free for #1 (behind schedule by 90+ minutes).

As can be seen in the video there are no Snap turnouts on the 1:1 railways.

For a while it looked like some heavy duty rain, it didn’t happen, but it was blowing like crazy!

Nicky likes Stack Trains…
