Large Scale Central

Rail Days at the North Carolina Transportation Museum

some great pictures, Ralph… thanks for sharing…

Jan and I were able to attend many years ago. It is a very well run place and before we got involved with Ken and others for that trip, totally unknown to us.

A few more short video clips from Rail Days.
All are HD and can be viewed full screen

Great thread Ralph. nice videos.

Thanks again Ralph, nice videos

A few more pictures. The Southern 6900 has some major electrical issues. The diesel runs, but they had a coolant leak several years ago that shorted out some electrical components. I’m not sure if this unit is owned by the state or the historical society, but funding for the repairs is a problem.

They were using the Southern 2601 to give short cab rides.

I was told the ACL 501 has some “issues”. I do know this is owned by the state. There is a lot of “red tape” involved in getting permission from the state to run this locomotive. Furthermore, any money needed for repairs has to come from the state.

I have my doubts the Shay will ever run again. I believe it needs a boiler. I have a photo from several years ago. I don’t think they’ve touched it since. Even the bucket is in the same spot it was then.

I believe this is a cosmetic only restoration.

They had maybe a half dozen horns on display. This is a Nathan.

604 and/or Shay will return to service one day…hopefully, we have to stay positive. I firmly believe based on my own opinion that the 75, 126 and 630 visits are a sign of hope for the NCTM steam program. Steam always brings more people to museum. Nice photos by the way.

I don’t know how reliable the information was, but I was told the 604 would return to operating condition.
The repairs required for 604 are much less expensive than the repairs required for the Shay.
I heard the 604 was out for repair, maybe Strasburg?
