Thanks for the comments fellas.

A very warm spring day today with plenty of sunshine. It was time to take the mini layout outside for some pictures.

Here is an overall shot of both sides. This was difficult to do in the work shed as I could not get back far enough to include the whole layout.
Here is the" Woods Side" with the log landing. The first cover of dirt and debris has been applied.

Here is the side that will have the rail camp and the log dump. Scenery has not been started on this side yet.

I think I need to get going on some backdrops the styrofoam blue is really sticking out!

I think I need to get going on some backdrops the styrofoam blue is really sticking out!

Nice work, Tom. Two very convincing scenes. I can only imagine how well it will look once you complete the backdrop. Thanks for sharing with us.

Why not just replace the backdrop with a row of standing pine trees?

Hey Doc,

Next time you have the “mini layout” outside, could you take a picture back away to see the whole structure? What kind of weight are you dealing with?

Do you have it on wheels or a cart? Can you move it by yourself? Very intriguing. Always enjoy your work.

Is the outside largescale layout entirely dismantled and returned to normal yard landscape?

Two winter scene backdrops ordered tonight 48"X18". More pics to come.

That is a good idea…but after thinking it out I am going to try photo backdrops. Thanks for the input. More pics to follow.

Hi Ric,

The mini sits on a light weight plastic cabinet that holds all the electrical goodies to run the beast. The modeled portion is removed from the cabinet and two square aluminum channels sit in grooves on the top of the cabinet. Basically they can be easily separated for movement. At one time the whole modeled portion (constructed of blue foam and aluminum channel) weighed about 10 pounds. The sculptamold overlayer I placed after carving the foam added weight and it is now about twenty pounds. I can move it myself but because of its size (48"X30") it is better moved by two people.

It was time for the big foliage…. trees in the winter.

Scenic Express came through with some of there sage brush armatures (not readily found here in Tennessee ) and roots and twigs from the garden were also used. Here are some of the first plantings near the log trestle bridge.

I really like the detail you can get in this large O scale with these diminutive On30 trains.

Thanks Korm. The detailing takes place in very small bites. The pictures were done in area 6" X 6"…took up a whole weekend to do. Glad this is a mini layout at this pace.

One thing that I’ve done to get forest floor detritus is to find some real detritus, put in my lovely bride’s blender, and chop it up, and then spread it around the layout. Its more scale-like.

Course chop for 0 Scale, fine chop for H0 Scale.

Agree. I have a 5 gallon bucket full of last fall’s colorful leaves ready for the blender. This will be the next scenery layer after the winter tree armatures. Wife said “no way” to using her blender. I had to get a cheapie from the local recycle store. SWMBO is obeyed.

I finally got rid of the STYROFOAM BLUE and put up some photo backdrops on the divider in the center of the mini layout.

Most photo backdrops are in summer or fall color schemes. I really had to search to find one that was a winter photo with leaves down and conifers giving only a hint of green.

I found two at “Backdrop Junction” made of vinyl that I think look OK.

I like the backdrops. I’ve been trying to come up with a plan for my indoor portion built last winter. The green painted concrete block wall doesn’t add much to photos (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)I work in a sign shop and can have photos printed on self adhesive vinyl, but coming up with a panoramic photo that will work with building flats has been my challenge. I will probably end up stitching a whole bunch of photos together in Photoshop.

Vinyl backdrops are very durable. You are fortunate to have access to a complete sign shop and could make a huge backdrop. I noted there are some custom backdrop designers out there on the web…but I think you will do well with photoshop and maybe Google Images???

I will be watching to see what you come up with.
