So, since joining the large scale madness almost 15 years ago, I realized I have become an addict, collecting unusual and oddball stuff. However, for almost 10 of those years, I have been searching for a certain USA trains reefer, and after the long search I finally found it, located in Germany. As with any usual addict I fought the craving, but caved and hit the buy button on evilbay, but my question is, now what? After searching for so long, and finally finding the car to give me my fix, what does a man do? Is it the signal of the end? Do I just find another “holy grail” car or loco to search for? Sell it all and collect something else? Any input from other serious addicts would be of great help on the road to recovery (or the nearest hobby store)
I’ve been in the same boat for three years now. I’m happy to say that I’ve been able to find everything on my long want list with the exception of one elusive USA Trains Beck’s Beer reefer. I’ve filled the gaps by checking Ebay, USAT and LGB Facebook pages, this board, and one other trains auction website on a daily basis. Sometimes twice daily. Even found my WP F3/B units on Craigslist. As time goes on, many of the discontinued G-scale engines and train cars are becoming much harder to find. There’s a few more that if they pop up I will grab, but the craving has diminished substantially. It isn’t quite finite, though. There’s always something that’ll come up in the meantime that I can’t resist, and I still find myself scanning the web for good deals. I have the same feeling you do, Aaron. But lately it’s tempered a bit, thank God!
So…if this collecting thing ain’t an addiction, I don’t know what is. Early next year, my goal will be to convert my locomotives to battery power and start collecting the new USA Trains Western Pacific streamliner cars for my Zephyr train.
