Got more planting and finishing work done today, notably in the logging area and and adjoining areas to each side of the original tunnel.
Here’s the logging area:
The Durango side between the logging area and the rock fall:
And the similar area on the Jasper side of the logging area:
While Nancy et al were doing that planting, I was building a tunnel portal for Durango end of the new rock fall tunnel.
Here’s the skeleton of the portal being checked for height clearance:
And width clearance:
And with planks.
Lots more to do here: build internal walls to hide the ugly interior, add rocks around the exterior, build telltales. And then ditto for the other end of the tunnel.

Between the rocks, plants and portal, that scene has tuned into one of my favorites, Jim. That last picture with the climax coming out of the tunnel is another canvas quality shot.
Jim, the portal looks fantastic, looking forward to to the finished product.
Made a bit of progress on planting last Friday, finally getting around to posting some pics.
On the portal, more rocks around it:

And on the other side of the rock slide, a bit of tweaking to the side of the track to add a bit of height as it was feeling a bit flattish:

Man, Jim, adding the rocks around the portal made a world of difference. Once the wood weathers like the retaining wall, it will look like its always been there. I like the added height on the other end of the tunnel, adds some additional structure between the track and landscaping. Thanks for sharing the photos.

That’s the fun part. Adding the plants and shrubs to the layout. Like Dave said, it comes alive.
Got some cool trees planted today, along with more finishing details, and some rocks around the portals in the new “rock fall” tunnel. Getting to the point where there’s maybe one more day of Nancy time and we’ll be declaring this phase done. I can’t believe how much better the railroad looks (imho) with even these new plantings, not filled in yet. I bet it will look great after 6 months. I promise to post pictures as things fill in a bit.
OK, here’s the progress today. First up: trees!

The rock fall continues to get little tweaks and it is looking darn realistic to me:
After next week, Nancy tells me that I’ll get a map of what all has been planted and where. I’ll see if I can get that info posted here so there’s more details about the various kinds of plants. At least 90% of the value will be for me so I can tell what the heck I have here. But maybe it will be useful to somebody else too…

No idea and don’t want to know, but you really got your $$ worth by having her do your layout. Hope to steal some ideas and incorporate them into my layout when planting time comes. Thanks for showing us everything, Jim!

Thanks John! I had already downloaded those PDFs on figure sculpting and they look pretty straightforward in theory (my fumbling fingers may disagree). I’m going to pursue an alternate path first and see if I can do some 3D sculpting and printing. I’ve started to learn Blender and have purchased a tablet with stylus so I can sculpt in a more natural way. I’ll start a topic on that when I get serious (i.e. after I retire and have more consistent time to spend on it).
