For some odd reason, that photo reminds me of something…
A wicked summer of heat and sudden cold from Monsoon down drafts and horizontal rain, was a wet year …
Seems expansion and contraction follow gravity more than my desires … a tight corner of compromise shifted beyond what I might over look … with track replaced, the gap and angle grew… trust me … no pics of my shame …
Above is a 4" easement curve. Removed 2 straight ties and added 3 curved ties…
Time to reballast, after the last Monsoon washed off most of the dirt and gravel… but the track is Smoooooth!

Oh the horror!, kind of neat though, destroy your trains like Gomez Adams, and put them back together for another run, lol
Ha Ha youse guys so funny, don’t know why I bother… not even one comment.
Anyway I’ve run out of planks and have been pondering a mine on a hill without a hill… a mobile? Nah…
Another ponder was adding a skirt to my flying fill, I even bought the silk … but a trestle is in my plans there…
Steel silk that is, found it in the lathe section of the Home Despot, holds it’s shape but will flex with weight …
Since I have a CT scan tomorrow and I go under on Thursday for a bronchoscopy, it makes sense to start a project. Keeps my foolish mind busy. Besides what’s a mountain mine without a hill?
First coat of the hardshell, I’ll tint the cement with a stucco tint for the color coat.
The ooze inside is the perfect anchor.
Hey John,
Just so you know, that Lego pool vid I posted was in response to the VERY COOL vintage photo you posted back in May. All that suspension made a connection in my brain somehow. And I agree with your assessment that they gradually moved the whole rig forward.
I’m all in with your hill technique. It’s a sort of thing I’d do, being concrete-inclined; but I’m a little surprised that you didn’t use rocks, as elsewhere on your layout. Were you needing more dimensional control for your mine’s foundation / etc.? Or are you intending to make the hill removable? Just curious.
Anyway, my prayers are with you on the scopes and scans, and for good news on both.
Take care my friend,
Cliff
Best of luck with the health system tomorrow John! We are all rooting for you!
I’m looking forward to you bouncing off that and making a cool mountain here. Maybe use some of the smaller rocks you have around to add some pizzazz by embedding them in the cement?
Cliff, I understood that back in May, I’m just naturally perturbed that they glossed over my cool fix, now.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)
Remember the old Hard Shell technique? Hydrocal over crumpled news papers, dip a strip of paper towel … well this isn’t that, but it is a hard candy shell, er no it’s a hard shell to avoid a wooden frame inside …(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-frown.gif) The steel is stiff enough to support sections of CementAll as it dries. The color coat will attach the extra weights…
Rocks??? On a layout? Really?
There was a hill covered with quartz boulders of ore … The back story to my railroad. Real mine, imaginary RR. I’ve 4x4’d over the right of way…
So now you want my future musings?
Well if I live long enough … drum roll… I’m aiming to do a cut away mountain from the back side showing the square set timbers used to hold the holes open. 8 years ago before my cancer I went through that mine 5 different ways. There were plenty of cracked timbers and straining loads to avoid touching, but heck, it was fun and exciting to explore.
From the house side the hill will be complete, but since it’s a walk in design, who wants to look at the plain old back side of a hill? On the left will be a small smelter to grade some ores.
You’ll have to come along to see if I can pull it off. I may go through a couple dozen ideas before something galvanizes.
edit: PS thanks for the good thoughts.
Good luck… that Cancer …it has infected a lot of us … I agree with the project to help with the not thinking about things…
So do you think the snake will take it over ?
Thanks Sean, the C is gone, now I’m dealing with the effects of the cure.
April’s procedure left me worse off and made me a wheezer, Thursday’s is to try and clean some out.
Today is to get the road map for my doc.
I asked for this round, so no the snake won’t.
I sure love your idea of a cutaway mountain with the square sets, wow, that would be incredible.
I did a cut mountain, just to get at the track. The neighbor kid loves sitting in there as the trains go by. It’s just a cavern-ish thing, no mine. But I’ve wanted to do a model like your describing, and just leave it indoors.
Here’s a famous old rendering of a Comstock mine, I always wanted to model this:
Go for it buddy!
Geez … ya coulda picked a simpler mine, ya know!(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

They are going out, sob (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)sob, no canasta tonight!
Tonight I’ll rely on Dr. Feelgood and tomorrow it’s Doc Sam …
Now for important news, bell wire is making strong staples holding my wire silk together.
Chop chop.
Attaboy on the hard shell John, keep us posted & picted!
I’m sure you’re wondering about whether to do a single vertical squareset structure that you look at head-on, or a walk-in sort of thing, with aisles amongst the stopes…
Little winzes you can operate, skip tracks, underground chutes & bins, lighting…
It’s about 1.5’ tall and growing…
I have a working set of plans for the square sets, with all the names that this old dog can’t quite care to remember …
This isn’t them…
Complete with a hanging ladder …
It’s a Primer …
In my mine … there wasn’t much framing of the adits and drifts, bigger areas that were mined out were back filled so other than chutes and cribs of waste rock, I didn’t see much of the square sets… I wonder if I’ll compromise?
Your exposed mine will be awesome! Go for it!
Have you seen this video?
Stope…adit…winze…skip…what is this? the New York Times crossword puzzle?
