Other small locos?

The new Bachmann porter will be the sidetank version of the saddletank, that is, with the bigger cab, etc. to make it more 1:20.3 … Their photo, from the Porter catalog apparently on what it should look like:

Supposed to be arriving momentarily… Matthew (OV)

The Gateway Garden Railroad Club saw the new Porter yesterday, during our Christmas Meeting at the “Photo Shop” getting ready for its debut in the magazines.

The club members also saw all of the other new Bachmann introductions due on the shelves by Christmas.

Hmmm… looks like the same cab from the Saddletanker. Similar proportions, be an interesting side by side comparison with the older sidetanker. Something tells me it won’t be too far apart from the 1st gen tanker… just better features and details.

Does anybody know if they have gone back to the previous, excellent, mechanism with the pivoting front axle instead of the saddletank type with the fixed front axle?
If they have gone back to the previous mech I will definitely buy at least one.
If it has the same mech as the saddle tanker I will pass.

Its likely to be the same drive as the saddletanker with the fixed front axle. I agree, my older Porter with the pivoting front axle runs far better than the later Porter. The front axle got fixed because of all those electronic do-dads so many modelers seem to think are necessary today. All that useless-to-me stuff is tucked in my Sadie so the weight is moved forward right over the front axle, so much so the thing is nose heavy as hell and would actually jamb to a halt on diverging switch frogs, I had to add a mess of weights inside the firebox area to help balance it out. Thats what they call “new and improved”

Seems that's the way with product development in nearly every field today. Fix it 'till it's broke or no one will buy it.
