Operations on the Candlewood Valley Scenic Railway

Jon’s QUOTE -

“I’m glad I’m not smart enough to design switching puzzles on my own railroad!”

Every once in awhile, I need to re-post this statement. Really? No switching puzzles! Wow!!!

He will get more than his fair share of them operating on Bob’s in August…

I never noticed anything particularly nasty at Bobs; nothing like the craziness at Ken’s and Bruce’s. But then again I spent last years session working the yard with Bruce. The biggest challenge I remember at Bobs (and mine as well) is keeping everything on the rails.

That’s everyone’s problem. Even for the big one to one guys.

Well, unfortunately while digging in the attic for a box to sell one of my Bug Maulers I found 4 usable wide radius switches; 2 right and 2 left. Don’t think I’ll be designing any puzzles, but expanding Walk Landing to 2 tracks and adding another industry or two along the way is a definite possibility. That will all need to wait until after Train Ops. RV needs some prep and driveway needs repair to get it out!

Priorities always get in the way of great ideas.

The siding on the wye sounds great!

I think we talked about this during our visit.

We did. A run-around was discussed and I took a cursory look yesterday to see if it could be done. So far, with grade differentials between tracks I haven’t seen a spot where it would work and be long enough. If I could get back to the main from the engine house lead after the first tree but before the second that might work…

However, after running a few trains yesterday, and comparing my ops to Bob’s, I think I may want to build a small yard for an outdoor terminus. Right now my ops are basically an out-and back turn. I have indoors designated as two yards and two industries, but it would work much better if it was just one yard with the two industries.

So now, the big decision becomes; do I continue to build on the ground - Walk Landing could become a yard on this side of the diamond…

Do what we discussed, and come off Coal Dump Curve with raised bench work into the back yard (old photo)…

I’m sure nothing additional will be built this year; so I have at least 6 months to think about it!
