Oley Valley 89' Flat Car kit

I’m a long ways away from attaching the bus! Shoot I still need to finish the CAD work so I can build them. Since it had three axles with articulation between the 2nd and 3rd, I’m guessing all three axles would be tied down?

The chains are moveable on the chain rail and if I’m read the book right the chain anchors also can swivel 360° on the track.

Ever feel like a kit is just more work than scratch building? That’s how I’m feeling right now with this 89’ flat. Analyzing drawings and model and the centersill is 6" too shallow. The overall deck height is fairly close but centersill just looks so wrong in terms of depth. The centersill should measure about 30" from the top of the deck to the bottom of the centersill and it only measures 24". That in turn messes up the angle brace length and the 5" I beam cross bearer which in turn messes up the side sill depth.

This kit is really starting to piss me off in terms of prototype accuracy. I can handle a few inches of in a minor dimension but 6" on the centersill is a bit much.

Lots of other issues with the model vs prototype and the overall quality of the model castings, FDM prints.

Really disappointed in the kit.

Sorry to hear that, Craig. That can be really frustrating. Is there an alternate prototype appropriate four your railroad?

Eric

Well yes and no. I’ll modify what I can and move forward. I’ll probably be scratch building one later anyways.

Saw some pictures somewhere of tanks being tied down on train cars, I am guessing that 2 chains on each end and 2 in the middle would plenty. And if I remember you are modeling in 80’s or earlier so the binders would be the cam lock snap binders , probably a little early to have ratchet style binders… I think .
