(NTT) Long Subjects in Forums

Bob,

Just one thought that came to me (I get 1 or 2 a year :D)…

How hard would it be in a separate RR construction/status forum to allow posts and comments as we do now except to give the author access to it (his own log only) once a month to delete posts not relevent to the subject? This would allow current discussion for a 30 day period, and longer at the author’s discretion, without wading through a lot of posts no longer relevent. Also someone coming onto the site a year or two later would be able to have questions, suggestions posted and answered directly and then eventually deleted if they didn’t have overall relevence.

The forum would have to be monitored to keep its new subjects exclusively on member’s railroads but that would have to be done I would think regardless of how the forum was set up. Too, with the author doing the moderating for his article (in addition to Bob’s normal monitoring of course) it would save Bob a lot of work trying to keep things on subject. As for the few that wouldn’t monitor their own RR log…that’s going to happen with some anyway.

Well, I like all the ideas. A question could be asked in the General Discussion and reference the Builder’s Log or as Richard said let the owner moderate his own building log. Boy wouldn’t that be unique, have someone responsible for their own subject and conduct. Scary, it wouold almost be like being an adult. If something got off subject he could move that part of the discussion to another forum and then delete from his own Builder’s Log.

Kevin, your current series in GR has been extremely interesting. I’ll post a question in the track portion to not get this too off subject.

Well this is the place to do it! What ya say Bob?

Sounds god to me.

A forum where only the poster can add to a topic will allow building logs of all kinds to be created that are easy to follow. Discussion in the general forum could be made easy by creating a topic with the same title by the log author. Cross linking the two topics in the first post of each would make it easy to find the discussion and log threads.

I’m already thinking about what my first post will be.

Isn;t that just an Article??? Granted the average user prolly needs a friendlier interface than what we’ve got (I do mine on a HTML editor and copy and past code mainly)…

If you say so Bart, but until last week I never paid attention that the article portion of LSC existed. I don’t mean to put anyone down that has contributed over there, but I do my best to just keep up with what is new on the forums. I was over there yesterday (to the articles) can’t say it is a very friendly place. I think it was the cobwebs from lack of use more than anything. Once I blew the dust off, some of that stuff was pretty good. Dated, but pretty good.

Same here Ric. I hadn’t previously looked at the “Articles”. The stuff there IS dated with the exception of Bruce’s and your postings from this year.

I guess that’s not too bad since Bob didn’t remember he had a “Live Steam” forum until it was pointed out to him!!!

So I guess one challenge is how to get the available forums and tools into more general use??

Happy RRing,

Jerry

Whatever happens , poor Bob isn’t likely to be allowed to forgot that tiny digression he made . But then , live steam men like getting their fingers burned .

Gee fellers…thats why they’re Articles…with the exception of my ramblings, they’re ment to be reference materials Consigned for the ages…

I can see that some of the articles appear “dated” . Now , how many of you keep back issues of magazines ?
Oh ? Why ?
I don’t know about your magazines , but mine are dated . Which is useful if someone has done a writeup on a prototype , 'cos the indeces are dated as well . And history doesn’t go out of date . Except when people finally decide to tell the truth . But that doesn’t apply here .
I find most articles written in the spirit of trying to help are useful , it is amazing how many little tips can be found in them .Even if you have been modelling since you helped on the pyramids .

Bart,

I don’t think I have a problem with the “Articles”, but I don’t know if it will satisfy my needs for the “construction log” and that is the purpose of my reference about the articles. Still working on a solution and hoping Bob will address the situation. Do you think if he did create an area could somehting be transferred from another forum to the new area? Do you have the capability to do this or is it purely Bob?

Actually yeah…I was just stirrin the pot a little…Bobs cooking up a few ideers from what I understand…Plus fixin up a few others…

Ric ,
I have just looked (in the Articles ) at Bart’s 3 parter on casting , and think it may be the format you could use . You know , Part 1 ,clearing the site , Part 2 stealing the rocks , Part 3 , how to lift rocks without injury–best written from hospital bed with foot elevated–it has more presence ,Part 4 , why did I start this ?
Seriously , it’s a good format , you can write as little or as much as you like for each part getting it done and out of the way while you get on with the next bit of track laying .
I look forward to seeing it .
Mike

Mike,

Most of mine is “back-peddling” because most the railroad has been built over the last 10 years. My thought is to go back and use old photos and posting to create a new file. The whole situation if you look back at the start of this posting is to have a far easier website posting and updates. In reality the best is right here on these forums, if Bob can allow it. You do need to know special slashes, bars or language to post something and you don’t need to create files to show files in another area or eventually publish to the web, which to me is nothing more than a giant pain in the arse. The KISS principle is very big in my life and really most of the people I want to show my postings to are right here now. I really think what I need to do is take about a week’s vacation and head up to Massachewsit and help Bob get this house remodeling thing done so he has more time for important stuff. Oh how we long for those days when we saw new and useful railroad ideas. I fear he is in the cycle of forever construction and the railroad has gone the way of slot car races.

Aaah ,gotcher ,
Yes , I can see your problem now . I would be lost before I started in that case . I have no answer to your problem , but I assume it would take the same storage as an article in the Aricle Section .
Whatever , don’t give up , you will be sure to have a lot of interest .
Mike
