NTOT! Dogs...?

Of your three choices, I think the Lab is probably the best. I’ve never owned one, but my brother has and I’ve known quite a few - they were all great dogs. Our last two have been Samoyeds. The first, a male, was given to us fully grown and hadn’t been treated well. He was possessive and could get nasty at times, but when Matthew was born he was very protective of the baby. When Matthew was about 7 or so, we got our current Samoyed, “Snowflake” as a pup from a good show breeder. She has been an absolute sweetheart - the gentlest dog I’ve ever had.

Well Labs are nice, we had two, but they are quite energetic and run around a lot, will trample right over your layout. We had a bassat these last 10 years, she was pretty laid back and liked the grandkids. Slept quite a bit , easy to get along with.

This is Doctor Tobius Fuzzface (Previous owner called him ‘Doc’, but Kim decided he looked more like a ‘Toby’) I think he’s part Basset because he’s so heavily boned, but the vet says he’s a rather rare blue and red ticked beagle. For a pound pup he came pretty well behaved, but not quite housebroken. He even puts up with Kimmee’s yappy little ratdogs trying to show him they that are ‘boss’ – at least until he’s had enough, then he sits on them. He’s also decided MY lazy chair is now HIS napping spot.

Unfortunately, we think he may have been beat. Sometimes he still cringes when you reach to pet him and something definitely broke his nose…

Guys thanks for all of the replies, photos and memories…

Getting close to making a choice, will let you all know when we do!

thanks…and if you have more to add, feel free, this has been a very educational and refreshing post!

You all make me want to go out and get a dog, and yes they are better than cats even though we now have a cat- a Maxx fixed male who is a terror, bites and claws the wife. He would NOT tolerate a dog, would hunt it down. My last dog was a Yokie. Took to Germany to live for several years and carried her every where. Driving on the Autobaun one day, she was in my lap and had her front paws on the stearing wheel, about freeked out a German who was passing us! He did a perfect double take! And yes I miss her.

Cale you know what is next. Your going to get a dog and then we are going to tell you what to name him/her. My 2 cents on that. don’t use a railroad trem as a name for your dog. Also stay away from nick names that married people might have for each other. Would hate for the neightbors to think your sife was talking to you when she is yelling “Honey get your but in the house now or spend all night outside”.

I know everybody has different choices and all dogs are individualistic, but a Bassett Hound has got to be the most “high maintenance” dog I have ever seen. My daughter has one, 'Murphy" and do you guys know what “SNARF” is? Have you ever seen Turner and Hotch"? Imagine the dog in that movie on steriods. I have seen “Snarf” hanging from the ceiling. If you let it dry it will brush off your dark suit pants and not leave a visible stain. But another dog knows its there.

Oh yeah great dogs. He is lovable, but very high maintenance.

Now you be careful! My Akita is named "Honey." :P

Oh, and BTW Cale, doesn’t matter what breed you get, your favorite chair won’t be YOUR chair anymore…

Wife said No on the Lab, Border Collie and Beagle after spending a few hours last week while cutting/coloring/styling the hair of the wife of the local shelters admin…I then went in search of a Spaniel, really like the Boykin (SC State Dog) but couldn’t do the required funds, considered the Springer and read that there may be some biting issues…Fell in love with the long legged Brittany (no longer considered a Spaniel)…called today to reserve till we can get down on the farm. Again I appreciate all the responses here, It’s been a fun thread! cale

great looking dog there Cale. Now all you have to do is house break the kids and potty train the dog and your all set.

Cal you will be very happy with the choice. I had a Britt, best dog I ever had. No matter where I went she was always their. I would walk all over my property without the dog. Then let her outside and she would follow my exact trail.

No, our dog will reside outdoors…kids are a different story

Then you might have to shave it to get all the burrs out of it's coat.

Spaniels really need regular brushing.

BTW I never heard of using beagles to hunt deer. I’d think their legs are a little short, and chasing deer with dogs would get you locked up for a looooong time here.

we used Beagles and Blue-Tick hounds crossed, some long legged treeing walker too (though they work equally well for coon)…

Had one dog, Speck, live to the ripe old age of 17…one of the only times I saw my Pop cry-the day she finally passed.

it’s how we do it down here in the South…

Anyone use a Wireless Fence? Pros/Cons/Thoughts

Cale,
Wireless fences, just don’t work. If the dog sees something he wants bad enough he will go through a wireless fence. I’ve seen it too many times to trust one. Good call on the Brittany though, one of our friends has one and shows it. We are Pembroke Welsh Corgi people, three of them, but all dog people are good people. We just found out our little boy is going to be a show dog

George

I use invisible fence. Worked very well to teach the limits of the yard to a Jack Russell… except that one time she was hot on the heels of a Raccoon. She tree’d the coon a short distance out of the yard and was raising holy h*ll in the middle of the night (she has a doggy door). Had to grab her to get her to shut up, take the collar off, carry her over the fence location and lock the doggy door.

We have had one recurring problem. The frost heave in our area (Northern Indiana) likes to break the wire. Must have had to fix it 5-6 times in about 12 years. Very difficult to find the break in a buried wire. I went for a bigger gage wire and it still broke. Can’t bury it any deeper, it won’t work. And you never know it’s broke until the dog wonders out of the yard.

Craig

P.S. If you decide to go that route, I rented a machine that makes burying the wire easy.

I have tried the invisable fence one time. the dogs found out that if you make a run at it it only hurts for a second. Then after they were done dogging around they would come home and sit just outside the range and bark so I would come let them back in the yard. I would build the dog a running pen and then have a run for them out side the pen as well. Also, chip the dog. I had a dog that loved to get out no matter what I did and that chip helped me get him back a few times.
