And now that I’ve bored you all to tears, here’s one last short one…

Ken,

When a steam engine is heading up a train and has a couple of diesels behind it, are the diesels actually pulling also or just being towed to be used on tough grades?

I could be wrong, but I always thought the steam was for the picturesque, nostalgic appearance and the diesels do most of the work. Rather like when the Thomas the Train steam locomotive shows up here with a diesel behind him.

Hauling 20 cars I would think they help on the grades, both going up and coming down. Not to mention an emergency.

I got a look into the coal bunker as it went underneath the bridge I was on and I could see the coal was pretty well used up. It wouldn’t burn that much coal just for show.

Completely enjoyed that Ken. That whistle sure is demanding. Not like that moose call I listen to with the UP stuff

That sure F’ed up my video too. It was so loud on my video you’d swear I was standing next to it instead of it being a 100 feet away.

They were definitely working the 765. I saw some wheel slippage several times

Hardly. Great videos; I’m really enjoying them.

love the last one, also i read it here but not the first time that the diesels are for dibraking

and just back up for a breakdown.

JD was saying something on the other thread about the diesels using dynamic braking going down grade. And I suspect they’d also be there in case 765 broke down and since they’re manned by experienced NS engineers, they’d also be very familiar with the route, which would be a big help to the 765 engineers.

Good stuff!

this is one of the engineers of 765

The bridge crossing over Sherman’s Creek was well lit when we arrived.

However, they held the 765 for several freights and the sun was rapidly dropping.

Nice Ralph!

A nice blast of the steam whistle in this video. You can also see quite clearly that the 765 isn’t merely being pushed around by the diesels. The diesels go by at idle, the 765 is workin it

Nice :] Almost as interesting as the train are the excited kids running around the SUV with the open hatch on the other side o the tracks!

This video is the best example of mainline steam so far. Good speed & working hard.

Since I’m not “retired”…it takes me a little longer to get things done
