Large Scale Central

Next Stop, Hogwarts! ( in G! )

Mik, part of it is the target audience for this set, it AINT us, its the toy train crowd, Xmas tree set crowd, the kids crowd, and the die hard movie fans. I got a close up look at the P.E. set and while its definetly NOT a scale model train by any measure, its a reasonable TOY train set, much like Lionel or older Marx O train sets. If you have ever seen some of those older non-scale trainsets, these are very much in that tradition. We are just getting spoiled in that we expect a fairly scale model in our chosen gauge, but Lionel is just doing what Lionel has always done, producing TOY trains, while trying to re-enter the G market. BTW I suspect Lionel DID get your letter but just “filed it away” the same way most of my letters to manufacturers have been:

Vic, Looks like you don’t write that often, do you?

The following is IMO and is an opinion on the big manufactures, not the smaller guys who are more responsive.

Most large manufacturers dont give a rats arse and never will.

As long as they can move loads of stuff with maximum profit, thats just fine. All the whinging in the world, right or wrong, the majority of em aint interested. Some of them are really clever and make it look like the customers have influence, thats just a cynical ploy to get ppl onside.

Some of those posts on manufacture’s site make me gag “Thankyou for your interest, the delivery is planned for, we are anticpating this…” Give me a break

My approach has always been

  1. If its just a little off the mark I’ll buy and fix it.

  2. If its too much work, I’ll leave it alone and go without, or make my own.

I dont see that changing in the next 100 years… Yeah I know some folk cant build there own stuff, if you cant I am sorry, thats just the way I see it.

Profit, Profit, Profit, Profit, Profit, Profit, Profit…

That is all.

Sadly, though, the difference between NEW "toy trains" and older ones, is the older ones were designed so that they could be fixed. Newer ones are designed to break and have to be thrown away so you will buy another one. Yes, I've looked at other newer Lionel offerings both in O and G... They both leave a bit to be desired. I just find it sad....... My grandfather was a diehard Lionel man most of his life. He did a LOT of Lionel service out of his basement. He bought at LEAST one of EVERY set Lionel produced between about 1950 and the late '70's, plus a LOT of prewar stuff when he could...A few years before he died he said he was disgusted with what was happening at Lionel, and if he hadn't already had so much invested he would have started over with Williams.... strong words from a gentle man.

No business has ever made it very long not making a profit. After all that is the point of being in business. Make a profit.
I don’t forgive them for not writing back but I’m not going to shot them for trying to make money.

The big manufactures have to look at a lot of things. Half the people on this forum don’t agreee on stuff. I like them as a toy, others like to modle, still others do operation, then there is USA style or Euro Style. You can’t please all the people all the time, so pick a market and go for it.
I think they have. ITs kids, and toy trains.

Just my 2 cents worth.

should rename the title of this topic to “Hogwash Express in G”
