I don’t know if anyone has tried this meathod in the past but I thought I would try to explain how I weathered this gondola car. I was trying to achieve that rusty pitted surface that I notice on beat up old freight cars. Putting color on it would look too much like it was just painted on rust. So since I was building these cars I had a chance to experament . I work on one side at a time . First I make a “wash” of 70% alcahol and using a 1" brush dip the brush into the alcahol and pick up the chalk color of choice and get the whole side wet. I like to use a hairdrier to quickly dry the wash and do it again and again until I am satisfied with the overall look. When I get to the last coat of wash on the car I take the chalk piece over the wash and lightly scrape the chalk color onto the wet wash.I concentrate the scrapings to the lower part of the ribs and anywhere I want and then seal it with Krylon and bingo , there it is. Anyway I thought i’d share this and maybe you’d give it a try and see how you like it.

This almost makes me want to defile some of my cars…HE HE HE

Don't inhale it whatever you do.

Thanks John for the warning. I do take every precaution when using any kind of chemical . Proper ventalation , gloves, resperator and knowledge of the products you are using are very important.

I was wundrin if anyone would weather these cars.
Nice job!
All the gons I have seen out on the mainline are beat to hell, some even lightly sway backed.

Here is a nice beat to hell Rail-Gon I shot today  Ralph

I'm with you, Nick. Although the weathered cars look cool and take some skill to produce, I wouldn't have the heart to do it to that beautiful Rail-Gon. My stuff looks weathered naturally after some time outdoors. I don't rush the process ;) Ralph

My excuse when I run a “brand new unweathered and undamaged car” is that it is new and being delivered to the customer.
Give it a lap or two around the layout and soon it is weathered and used.
I don’t model modern stuff, but if I did, it would prolly be tagged by graffiti as well.

I got the other Railgon done today . Can’t seem to be able to post a couple of photo’s right now for some reason . Will try later.
