I’ll throw in a dozen or two, “feeder Fish” on Thursday morning…that should keep the musquito larva under control.

I just installed a new liner in my creek....filling the pond now.....it takes about 5 hours to fill it. I treated the water, and got the air pump working. Another hour and the water level will be high enough to put on the water pump for a test.
Where are the pictures of the creek and the pond and the … ??
I don’t do pictures…I just build…and build…and…
Maybe someone will post some pictures of the pond on the web page…

The pond is kept natural. It isn’t really green, it is the same colour as the water in the rivers around here. The goldfish are actually vegitarians, and eat algi. They are quite at home in the rather brown/green water, just like their original Carp family members.
We usually have quite healthy fish.
The only reason I bother with fish in the pond is really to have them control the breeding of musquitoes in the pond. In spite of being primarily vegitarians, the gold fish eat their larva.
During the course of the year, we feed our fish, just plain “Rolled oats”, but very sparingly. The fish seem to thrive, and breed very well.
The only thing I do to aid their lives, is to promote the growth of water lillies, and I also keep a small piston air pump running, to pump air into the water in the form of an air/water pump, that circulates the water from the bottom to the top. This beakes the surface tention, and helps to release any methane gas from the bottom.
We do not filter the water. The stream is fed from a “Swiming pool” type skimmer in the side of the pond, through an old “Laundry tub” pump, into the head of the stream. This aeriates the water as it flows over the rocks and pebbles.
I don’t claim to be any style of expert, but this system has worked for over 30 years, and I see no reason to change now, and spend more money needlessly.
Fred,
We’re trying to skip the gold fish, but it’s still a learning curve. We learn as we go and … in thirty years we’ll be able to tell what does or doesn’t work.
