Meanwhile back at the ranch, my funky little bridge needs some detail to belong in this year’s build. I’ve been wondering if my Bad Brad nailer couldn’t become my spiker. While they’d never convince Father Fred, they might trick my eyes and yours…
I removed the ties from red to red, including the markers. I put the track back, but not screwed in…
Out back began the experiment … Spacers, unlike the pins, brads seem to counter sink themselves … I tried different parts of a section of rail. At first there wasn’t much change until I lowered the pressure to 60# and fired across the rail’s foot. Brad guns have a safety feature that makes sure the nailer is firm against the wood, the spacer lets me defeat that bothersome safeguard. It’s a little bit tricky to fire between the rails, the pic was taken with my left hand between shooting 2 brads …
As you can see too long isn’t a good look …
Close up they’re brads, backed off I’m hoping close enough …

I used that bolt as a nail set, the concave tip a bonus!
Those spikes look good to me; don’t see anything wrong with that.

The speed tape held and now the 2nd stringer is gluing up… see above without the red tape or clamp…

Deck is glued up, after it’s set good I’ll spike the rails.
The guard rails were 8’ D opened to fit the 10’D, I’ll bend the ends over once I like the fit.
I’m leaving them long as the fill area isn’t very stable, on a fault y’know.

As the sun sets in the west, I hauled my air compressor around the house, set the pressure at 60# and used a rail foot as a spacer. The good news is the bridge is strong enough that I can hammer my ‘spikes’ down tight against the rail.
I have a box of rust to stain them and the guard rails too.
They are long now, when set they will hold the foot
I ran out of light … and gumption.

I like this bridge design, it’s quite strong and easy to build.

Other than staining the guard rails and the bridge rail feets, you can stick a fork…
I shot a brad on either side of the rails, then used a pair of 12" channel lock pliers to squeeze them together, bending over the foots. Grabbed the Dremmel and some separating discs and sliced off all their heads! Good enuf at 6’. Since they’re HF brads, they’ll be rust soon.
Been fun and I did win this bridge, considering I am a Professional Crastinator, that’s something!
And it even has firewater and guard rails. I keep talking about guard rails, but you actually done it. I’d rust the rails but I think I wouldn’t stain the ties…the old bridge got washed out, you know, and this is a new one just built in its place.
I’m thinking grimy brown with rust highlights on the guard rails. They aren’t spiked yet. I have a box of rust from the old staining snakes … I’ll paint the rust back on the rail feets, where the plastic fixtures blocked the stain and I nicked it with the disc.
The wood is fine the way it is. It’s all cedar.
