Large Scale Central

Marty's has been cancelled...

For those of US who have that problem, raise the railroad! Either on low retaining walls or 4x4 (treated) and 2x track supports. No, you don’t get many flowers, scrubs, or trees but you don’t have to get down on your knees to re-rail an engine or car - or Car’s! One nice thing about this set-up your eye to eye with your equipment.

That can be a scary thing in some cases.

Ducks and gets back to the tunnel portals.

I gather he means; “You are, or you’re eye to eye with…”

Paul, at the lowest level my track is about 10 inches or so off the ground, on a trestle and a fill. As the railroad climbs, the ground rises up until the track is at ground level, and in a cut in one place. So, sitting on my porch, I am almost eye level with many parts of my railroad. As for raising it up even further, that would require placing the whole she-bang on stilts, or building a heck of a lot of retaining walls.

As for re-railing cars, I seldom have to do that. Properly gauged wheels on cars with properly adjusted couplers and decent (not great) track-work, goes a long way to preventing putting equipment on the ground.

Glad you mention that!

Jerry, the getting down isn’t what bothers me. Its the getting back up again that can be a real…challenge.

Amen to that… (http://forums.mylargescale.com/images/smilies/smiley.gif)(http://forums.mylargescale.com/images/smilies/smiley.gif)(http://forums.mylargescale.com/images/smilies/smiley.gif)(http://forums.mylargescale.com/images/smilies/smiley.gif)(http://forums.mylargescale.com/images/smilies/smiley.gif)

My railroad started the summer nice till the temps hit the upper 90’s to 100 each day and that took its toll on track fast this year. I have a 20’ section that still needs to be replaced and the back side of the railroad has a very scale “abandoned” look. I believe the last time anything ran was in mid June when I was testing that failed smoke unit.

Just cancelled my reservations at the Lied Lodge in Nebraska City. It will be strange not spending our wedding anniversary at Marty’s like we have for the past five years. I will sure miss seeing all of you regulars who used to attend.

Still, there is always a bright side. I just booked a couple of nights at a Chama hotel for the end of September and purchased tickets in the parlor car for the run up to Osier and back. I guess that Mary and I will continue of spending our anniversary doing train-related activities after all.

For those of you not in on the train anniversary thing, we were married in Fairfax, Virginia back in 1978. We didn’t have time to go on a honeymoon then but the Metro had just opened the red line under the Potomac and over into D.C. After the wedding, we drove over to the Pentagon station, got on the train, and rode it to the end of the line and back. We decided to do something train-related every year on our anniversary to celebrate.

I think I’ll keep her!
