Mark as Read / new posts

The only time I see a “new post” flag is when I post something. No flags for others new posts. Just watching the “last post” dates on the right, thinking, “hmm, when was I on last?”

Is it just me, or does it seem really dead in here? It seems as if the program is marking things read as midnight becomes 0001.

Thanks Bob, works exactly as I was wishing for i.e. check the different sections, when done use the last section to “reset” for the next time. Quick and easy!

HJ,

Your results sure are different than mine. I read the postings about slaves in the civil war and went back to the Index page and nothing was marked to have not been read.

Bob -

Did you make a change in the last day or so? Starting sometime yesterday, the New Post icon has been going away after I read a few without my clicking on Mark All Read.

I found some posts that I missed by checking the Recent Posts on the home page.

Nope, no changes recently. Hmm.

Dear Bob,

Windows 2000, Foxfire

If someone else posts, it seems that the “new post flag” only sets if I’m logged in at the time that they post.

Hmm.

Joe: Are you “logging out” at the top of the page when you’re done reading the forums, or just wandering away to another site?

Just wandering away.

It seems OK now, not sure what happened. Here’s my current method -

Start at the top, open each forum with new posts and read what interests me. When I’m done I go into any forum, then Mark All as Read.

Twice I’ve noticed when I go back to the index page, forums that had new posts no longer show as having new posts. At this point I have not left, or hit Mark all as read. Some time may have passed and the browser may have lost focus, but I stayed on LSC.

I’ll let you know if it happens again.

EDIT: Oops - You said Joe and I read Jon. Good thing Joe answered too

Bob,

I usually log out after I’m done reading. I may occasionally forget, or go to chat for a bit while still logged into the forum.

No flags at all when logging in this morning after being logged out for 20 hours or so.

Joe Satnik

Edit: Added “when logging in”.

My last post (or edit?) here 10:35:28 did set the flag on my screen.

@joe: Interesting. Try NOT logging out next time and see if that helps/hurts?

Ok, I’ll try leaving to different website without logging out.

A post in Rolling Stock at 10:52:54 did set my flag while logged in and reading in the “General” sub-forum.

Yesterday while reading the forums I experienced what Jon did, before I had finished checking all of the new posts my return to the index showed no new posts and I had not hit the “mark all as read” button

Dear Bob,

Came back to forum (had not logged out yesterday) to find the flags had worked to show new posts. (Encouraging.)

Went to “Power and Sound”, then read the one new post, then to power and sound, then clicked “mark all posts as read”, expecting only the post flag and “Power and Sound” sub-forum flag (on the index page) to clear. Clicked on the index page to find that all “new post” flags everywhere were cleared. (Discouraging.)

Now I don’t know if all the flags disappeared from my single sub-forum m.a.p.a.r. click, or if they would have all cleared just by navigating from the index to the sub-forum, to the post, to the sub-forum (no mapar) and to the index again.

Good hunting, and thanks for the forum.

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

Edit: grammar, clarifications in second paragraph.

@Joe: Thanks. That points me in the right direction. Gonna hammer on this code tonight and tomorrow, hopefully get it working 100%.

Thanks again

Much as I like the speed of the “Mark all topics Read” button, I REALLY miss having the site keep track automatically.

I do believe that I’ve missed a bunch of posts…

NOT AT ALL A COMPLAINT, just hoping to help:

I had recently noticed that the forums & individual thread headers no longer change after a visit. I really liked and depended on that feature!

Finally saw this thread yesterday. I tried the “mark all read” and everything looked as if it was read, just as described.

This afternoon, the forum headers on the index page show that there are new messages, but the individual threads within a forum no longer show the flag when they are not yet read. Really hard to use this way, as I have to remember or keep track of what & when something was read.

Platform is a MacBook running OSX 10.5.8 using Safari 4.0.5.

Happy RRing,

Jerry

I'm still not getting the New Posts marker very often; usually not at all. When it does appear here, it's after I add something to a thread, but not if someone else does. I think the Mark as Read is working, though it's hard to tell with no indication that anything has not been read. For what it's worth, I'm using Firefox 3.6. Pro tem, I'm relying on the date of last post, since I usually have a fair idea of how long it has been since I looked in here.
