Large Scale Central

Lionel 4-4-2 Atlantic, what scale is it?

I have 2 of them.

One has been converted to a 2-8-0. I’ve reworked the tenders for oil burning.

I run them with my 1:32 Accucraft and MTH cars and they look just fine to me.

So I consider them 1:32 scale.

Here are two pictures of the Atlantic and Challenger

Challenger was 16’ 3" tall, and a PRR E6 was 15’ even. Looks close enough to scale for 1/32.

2-8-0? Nope, its going to stay an Atlantic, back in the days before lawyers I grew up crawling all over and under 3025 at Traveltown, so the Atlantic type is rather special for me.

The Aristo tender is only about an inch longer? thats not too bad, the particular express engines SP used to use for long distance fast mail service had VERY long tenders, the picture I recall one had a vandy tender longer than the locomotive. So far the only issue I can see with the Aristo vandy is that are very expensive, same problem with any passenger cars.

If the AC heavyweights look good behind it, good, that what I was hoping, I will tray to find some down the line, my idea for a “visiting” train is a NYC or SP Fast Mail express, meaning baggage car, combine and a couple of milk cars.

For now, the standard tender will remain, if fortune favors the foolish, than maybe I will be able to snare a vandy, knowing that scalewise it should be OK is what I really needed to know so if the opportunity presents itself I know I’m good scale/proportion wise

The Engine looks great with heavyweights behind it.

You can also see in the video from a past Train show about 4:30 into the video of my Atlantic pulling heavyweights.

Thanks Nick, given that its been stated that the Aristo heavyweights actually measure out closer to 1/32 than the declared 1/29 and that this was first produced before Polk “invented” 1/29 (this is 1984 vintage), I guess I’ll consider it closest to the 1/32 scale camp, what do they say: close enough for Government work?

This is going to be a long term project for me, in as much as I dont actually have anywhere to run it!

The plan is to build a stationary roller display for now, and we’ll see what the favors the model railroad Gods bestow this train show season.

Vic,

Here’s another photo from that 2005 day when I ran the double-header Atlantic-Pacific. With Heavyweights.

And did you say stationary display?

Vic,

If I’m not mistaken, I believe the Atlantic’s scale out to 1/30th, Like you said. Close enough.

Sure would be great to have USA Trains do a Diecast update version of this loco.
