Learning 3D-CAD

We are so trained to see things in two dimensions that three, though normal to live in, IS difficult to visualize, especially in a two dimensional medium! An interesting project you’ve got there.

Tinkercad would be like building a watch with mittens on, I think. But it’s great for quick simple shaped things.

I’ve got about 6 hours into this one simple drawing so far. I’ve learned a lot, but have just scratched the surface. One thing that had me going for a while last night was joining two elements together. I could get them lined up perfect in one view, then rotate to find they were far apart on the other plane! I figured out that is because depending on the angle of view, you can have no depth perception at all.

I have the deck framed and covered. Want to go back and re-do the covering as I figured out how to use a dynamic element AFTER I had made a zillion copies and placed them manually. The next challenge will be track. Found a few possibilities in the warehouse, bit I might just scratch build some.

And on the third day; something close to respectable…

Tomorrow I’ll take some nice straight on shots of all sides of my house and work on a a full 3D background model of the house.

Jon,

The best advice I can give for learning Sketchup is to get a hold of “Sketchup for Dummies”. They show a lot of short cuts, etc that making drawing so much easier. My library seems to have a copy on hand most often, and I usually check it out if I know I’m going to be drawing a lot, as the book makes for a good reference tool.

For example, you can use the arrow keys to lock a line in the X,Y, or Z axis.

Actually the best shots are taken at a perspective if you’re trying to build a model from the photograph. If you’re simply trying to ‘wall paper’ a side straight on shots will work.

Thanks Craig. The idea is to build a 3D photo of the house to use for landscaping idea development. Something a bit nicer and more to scale than in the photo above. I was figuring to “decorate” a very basic model of the house with no windows or doors using the photos. But since I’m out there; I’ll take both so I have a good stock set.

Well if your trying to build a scale model from the photos you can do a pretty decent job even if you don’t have a know dimension, but if say you know one wall is x feet long the scaling becomes much better.
I designed and drew up the plane for my feed mill complex from a couple of basic overhead plans that showed the size of the foundation, and a variety of photos. I ended up with weird numbers like 167’ 9", so I rounded everything up to a whole number. But I goth noun information so that I could build the structure.
Stechup for dummies or even YouTube videos can help you figure out how to make your drawings. There’s lots of good YouTube videos on different tricks and methods.
