Lakeville Amboy & Conneaut's new coal tower. Terry's Build l

I need to do some research on how to load this thing. I haven’t given any thought whatsoever to a loading system like bucket lifts or an auger.

Ken, in retrospect I should have done that. I’ve been adding bracing to the inside, a lot of bracing, in hopes this won’t happen. The cracking that I experienced was in the main legs of the tower. Kinda sucks because the wood that I was using was ‘kiln dried’. I honestly have had better luck with the crappy cedar the fence company gives me. Oh, well. I’ll keep plugging on. By the way, that’s a great looking coaling tower.

Terry

Don’t feel bad. I was as far along on mine if not more more then what you have done, and tore it apart and started over…

I modeled this one after the one in Chama with some artistic license. left off the hoist house under the bin, but modeled the hoist tower and house on the top. Just to give ya some inspiration…

Mine will be a much more ‘low budget’ tower for a struggling narrow gauge railroad.

Terry

Great model. I see no cracks on my review. I think it looks excellent.

I agree Doc

I’ve been doing a bunch of little boring work. I’ve taken a few pics but they are boring so I didn’t waste the time to post them. When they are installed I’ll post more.

The door is going on the hoist/sand drying house.

House coming together.

I bought a sheet of tile for rock so my cost is up to about $15.
That is all, as you were.

Some more work

Making the hoist/sand house. I decided to cover the ends with rock. I like the look of others peoples work with the stone so I thought I would give it a try.

The crank for the coal shoot.

Yea, that stone is nice to work with and looks good. Gives it a solid, permanent appearance. Nice job!

Looking very nice Terry, did you get the stone work at Lowe’s I have seen others use it but not sure where it is bought or made?. Like Boomer said it makes the wood work really stand out… Travis

I get it at Lowes in the tile dept. Natural Stone Mosaic, item #255450.

Yup, Lowes. My home depot doesn’t carry it. Also, it’s not in the floor tile isle I found it in the next one over, wall tile… go figure.

I got a lot done today and forgot to take pictures. Yay me.

Yesterday and todays work. I have a picture of an enclosed coal loading bucket. It was used in the north for weather purposes. So the LA&C RR decided to go that route. I used a 2 1/2 square pvc tube for the loading chute.

I like the look of the rock so I decided to give the chute a sturdy base.

More to come.

Terry

-T-, you going to be able to get that out of your basement?

Looks good, If this were standard gauge I’d be all over it.

Its gonna be close Bob.

Terry it looks great, some great thinking and planning.

I have gotten a lot done but lost my camera, which is also my phone…

Terry

I’m really struggling with the chute and door. I don’t think I’m gonna make the deadline. I started with brass but butchered it, bad. It got too cold in the barn to work so I brought the torch inside to solder/braze the brass. Bout burnt the house down… I may go the route of styrene.

The tower itself though is done.

Here is todays work. The chute in all it’s glory…

I still have a bit to do. I may make it yet!!!
