Krylon Foil Metallic Paint

Devon, did you find a silver color that looks good? I’ve tried painting some of the printed diesel horns to match the chrome of the Aristo FA units.

Greg

Not sure in todays day and time but their aluminum paint use to oxidize when it got water on it

Looking for chrome, aluminum I got, a fair amount of that in various manufacturers (yes horns were normally aluminum color, but the Aristo Diesel FA has chrome)

Greg, Have you checked out Alclad II paints? They have a good selection of metal paints including chrome.

I have a Facebook friend that does model trucks and I will ask him what he uses, I remember him doing some tests with different chrome paints. But to be fair I know his stuff is all indoors.

Thanks Don yes, I have tried that specific brand, and it’s not bad.

Thanks Pete, all info welcome.

Greg

Greg there is a silver version of the same paint I am referring too. https://www.amazon.com/Krylon-K01060000-Premium-Metallic-Silver/dp/B007RH9RBW while I have not tried it yet if it has the same properties as this gold then it will be about as good as I have found. I have never found a “chrome” paint I like. And when doing cars I swear I think I tried everything. The buffable Model Masters by testors, the aluminum was what I did use what it still did not look like chrome plating. I would give this stuff a shot and see. It is, so far the closest to real metal look as I have found. Now with that said, I never did it, but some of the model car guys I ran with used silver leafing. https://www.amazon.com/silver-leaf/s?k=silver+leaf but I never tried it as it is a tedious process for such a small return on small detail parts.

Doc,

I hope they either have an answer or come up with one. It would be a shame to have such a nice paint only to not have it stay that way when you clear coat it to protect it. I do want to try it over a self etching primer or my favorite goto matte black which is chalkbaord paint. I am hoping the tooth of self etching primer or chalkboard paint will hold it on and then not need to be clear coated. I will report back.

Still waiting for a response. Not sure if I will considering what’s going on in the world.

I need to make a reflector for my head light. I will buy some silver and see how it does.

I just got a response from Krylon. They cannot recommend any clear coat for their foil paints that won’t dull or discolor the finish.

Greg , I got an answer from my modeler friend, he likes Spaz-Stix Mirror Chrome. He says the Rustoleum brand can be very easi marred by fingerprints

Well I like this stuff but It is not the end all. I m having trouble getting good stenciling from it on a small scale. I will play more with it but so far its being finicky.

Look for a flashlight, they have ready made reflectors, with the bulb hole.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Devon, Bachmann still has headlights and reflectors, and they do sell the reflector separate and they are like a mirror just don’t have lenses, Bill

I made a mold of a minimag lite reflector. I have lots of them. I just need to paint them. And build the head lamp.

Okay so I like the looks of this stuff. Very nice. But doc is right. Its fragile. Dulls easy. Oils from your hand dull it significantly. I am going to clear coat it even though doc says it dulls it, but it needs protected.

Try this brand…

Best Clear Coat Spray Paint Reviews 2020 - Bestalyze

I found it easier to mist on as the droplets are finer than other clear coats… be sure your surface is dry.

I will give that a try. Given that it is acrylic and not enamel or some other solvent base it may not react with the gold. I’ll let you know. No matter what it needs a clear of some sort. Any handling of this paint does ruin it.

Devon,

I may have found the answer to our quest for a clear coat for Krylon foil paint. It is a water-based paint. Clean up is with water. Sorry for it being sideways.

Here is the result. The sample on the top is the Krylon Foil Gold sprayed over a coat of gloss black. The sample on the bottom is sprayed with the clear coat shown above. I think it looks great. It has a slightly different sheen but hardly noticeable. It says to let dry for at least 6 hours so I won’t be able to give it a scratch test until tomorrow.
