....John Allen's "Gorre & Dapheted" legendary model railroad
I've read about two things that John regretted --- one was the name of his railroad. Believe it or not, he once said that he wished he had given it a serious name, but by then it was too late... I think most of us would agree he was mistaken, and the G&D name was just great. Anyway...

Did you know that his operator pals nicknamed it the G-d D-mn-d Railroad?

Traditionally, commuters devised leg-pulling nicknames based on the initials of their regular commuter line. As with John’s operators, that tradition has been upheld on my own ‘Late and Slow’. And that in turn is based on the name of an old Model Railroad columnist from Way Wayback, who called himself Leighton Slough.

The other regret of John’s, by the way, was the painted clouds on his backdrop; he said that if he had it to do over again he’d leave the clouds out altogether. I can understand that. I thought his clouds were pretty darn convincing, but like John, I’ve concluded that for photographic purposes at least, and even for a regular backdrop, you’re generally better off without 'em… Opinions differ on this.

Vis a vis clouds in the background … guess it depends on the clouds, and how many photos you take.

That’s the old SCRY … in the living room … and it was always one of my favorite views.

On the subject of Life, imitates Art, imitates Life … I offer the following, an actual operating business near my college campus.

Even I dare not actually comment… Matthew (OV)

Historically the bunghole was the hole drilled into a whiskey or rum barrel that was then either plugged with a cork or a tap

but I have heard it used in a different context

I think you hit the nail on the head here, Tom. My baby brother's a lawyer... He was pretty smart until he went to law school, then he just got dumber and dumber, poor kid...

'Nuff said…

Speaking of names, and railroading… my old “Departed” father-in-law, was called “Ben T. Conrod”…in memory of him, I call our Chief Engineer, on the IPP&W, by that name…

Finally, I get it. ROTFLMAO!

When I first visited Colorado I drove past a liquor store called " Liquor between the peaks"

Long Branch Saloon — Liquor in the Front, Poker in the Rear.

Actual saloon advertisement in Big Timber, Montana.

Then there is the tow truck company that says, “We won’t charge you an arm and a leg, all we want are your tows”.

While sitting at a traffic light the other day, a dump truck went by that hauls bulk material. The company listing on the side of the truck was, “Take A Dump, Inc”.

Saw a tow truck that said, “23 1/2 hour towing.”

Guess he wanted lunch off.

Saw a septic pumping truck labeled, “Yesterday’s meals on wheels.”

Been toying with adding “Grabenscheiss’s Dept Store” to my indoor layout.

In the sign business we run into a few funny ones. Took this one down, apparently the slogan Take your Suits to Zoots wasn’t enough to drive the business…
