The weather cooled off enough to work outside for just a bit. Below is a picture of the main headed into Green Springs Yard. The track at the lower right leads to Brunt Interchange and Smith Pond Mill. In this configuration, the yard lead on the right was seldom used; not only that, but sometimes the train would be too long to run around when it got into the yard.
Earlier, one of my operators suggested that I could put in a switch and connect the yard to the main. I had built up a switch using the spiker and composite ties, but it had been too miserable outside to do any work. It was too cloudy to go birding this morning, so working on the railroad seemed to be a good alternative. I took out my cordless Dremel, cut the track, ripped up some of the ladder and put the switch in place.
It’s still humid as all get out, so my test runs were rather limited, but it sure seems good. Maybe I can have another ops session soon. Who knows, it might cool off enough by October.
Yeah…now that looks more effcient! Gives you the option of two different run arounds, like for having the switcher tack on the cabin and such…
Distance is rather deceiving… the additional switch looks good… Of course, the other alternative would have been to put the switch in the lower right track that heads into Brunt Interchange & Smith pond Mill, thus making the runaround track longer, and giving 2 ways out of the yard… Useful during periods of Heavy Traffic…
Either way, it’s a nice improvement…
Andy…
This is NG! We don’t have HEAVY traffic. I have two trains scheduled during an ops session. One out of Green Springs, one into. They usually meet in Occoquan - the town just outside the yard.
Next time, we’ll have you run a session here. 3 hours…
I would love to come try that some time. For years, I have admired your models & RR.

I’m free most days.
nice improvement Bruce, I like the flow though I think I may have tried to pick up an extra car length by setting the switch as the curve

It’s those BS cars…
…grinning…
That’s a definite improvement, Bruce, although I would have probably done it the way Andy suggested. But that’s just a personal preference. Been to hot here too, to even think about an ops session and I’m gettin itchy…

I'm gettin itchy......;)
Yep, it’s time to have an ops session. I’m just not ready to go out in this weather…
Although I AM open to suggested dates.

The way things are going, it should be pretty nice out in early December

Jean and I do some volunteer work every week and the place gets all sorts of donations. Most donations are clothing, housewares, or food, but there’s always something strange showing up. We got this Korber Models kit in a few months ago and we donated some cash to obtain it. I finally got around to putting it together. It only takes a few hours to put it together and paint it, but it’s a nice little kit. It’s a bit smaller than 1:20, but fits in nicely on the layout and allows me to attach a label to the interchange!
Bruce I really like this little station and thinking about building something like it. What are the dimensions?
Base is 10" x 3 3/4". Building is 3 1/2" square. It’s 6" high at the peak.
I got tired of the ballast running away from the track. I should have added more fill dirt, but it’s on a slope, so something is always going to wash away.
Whenever I ordered material from TAP Plastics, Russ always included some scraps for me to play with. Among these were several pieces of acrylic that were about 1 1/2" x 42". I glued these together at a ninety degree angle and covered one edge with some Precision Products siding. I then put some gravel on top of it, and I have a very quick little retaining wall.
I liked it so much that I made some brick ones as well.
