Large Scale Central

If you had to choose just one locomotive!

If I had to choose just one loco, it would be this one:

I’ve always loved EBT #12, and am fortunate to have it in my collection. Some day, I’ll have a railroad in a back yard large enough to do it justice. I love my 2-8-0s, but this one is most definitely the “if the house is on fire, grab it on the way out” locomotive.

Later,

K

I’m with Vic…The LGB Porter 0-4-0. Has to be the most “bashed” loco of all time!

My ultimate favorite locomotive. Swedish B class 4-6-0. I think they’re very handsome locomotives with the streamlined smokebox door and cab. Overall I find them aesthetically pleasing. A close second would be the G.W.R 0-6-0 Pannier Tank locomotives.

In the full scale world, my choice is the GG-1. It always looked like it was never working hard, and I used to see 4 and 5 unit freight trains!

Cab Forward!
Just looks like one tuff piece of equipment!

Stacy, do you have an easier question? Like maybe explain Schrodinger’s Wave Equation in detail, or explain General Relativity according to Einstein?

Seriously, I just can’t make a decision.

Waiting for TAC’s choice…with photo, of course.

F40PH-2C in 1/29 scale…time for a commuter rail locomotive.

What if it was 1:26.875 and 3/10’s scale would that be ok?

Ah, well 1/LGB might seem like a good choice, but I think if your from the northeast (Near USAT headquarters) then 1/29 is the law. Course, when it comes to narrow gauge, we get all serious and break out the 1:20.3 scale…and don’t you dare drop that .3!

tac’s choice is -

CPR Royal Hudson

SP&S Northern #700

Any Shay, but the Willamette version gets priority.

Any Heisler.

Krauss-Maffei S3/6

Earl or Countess from the W&Ll

Any Beyer-Garratt

Any Colorado mike

WP&YR mike #73

That’s about it, I think.

I get overwhelmed trying to think of a #1 locomotive in the real world. On my railroad, if I had to give up all of my locomotives but one, first of all I would cry. I really enjoy each and everyone of them. My second choice would be that BN SD40-2 that I think it was Craig who posted. But my #1 on my little railroad would have to be one of the three GP40’s that I have that started as BN and ended up as my K&E.

I couldn’t possibly choose just one! I love all steam locomotives, from tiny industrial 0-4-0’s to the mighty Big Boy, and everything in between. Also all eras of steam power, from the primitive early stuff right up to the end of steam. I like old, grimy locos and highly polished locos decked out in brass, colorful paint and varnished wood. I like high-stepping passenger locos and pure grunt, slow drag Mallets. I like oddball, one-of-a-kind locos and common, everyday workhorses.

Heck, even a diesel will get my attention and make my heart race at least a little bit! I love watching and hearing 4-5 modern diesels hauling a long string of cars across the desert. Or watching a worn, old switcher shifting a few cars around.

Just one? The climax.
But I have more.
Big steam, the NKP Berkshires.
Diesel, SD7/9.
European, The flying Scotsman.
I also have a fondness for the big dash 9s.

As much as I’d like to say the BL2, I can’t bring myself to passing up the high stepping “Atlantic”.

I would choose the original LGB Mogul. I have one from 1987 still running strong. I’m not choosing my favorite loco–just one that is reliable that I can enjoy into my doddering old age.

OK guys this is way to easy for me. I’ll bet that most of you already know the answer.

My very own girlfriend. D&RGW C-18 2-8-0 #315

BTW: There were more 2-8-0 consolations built then any other type of steam engine built.

Sorry Bill. Ha! That’s funny. Or maybe not. I know some might go into convulsions trying to decide. LOL

Anyway, I guess the reality is, most of us in here like what we like because it sits well with us personally.

In my new profile picture is another of my all time favorite locomotives ever. UP’s Centennial Diesel. What a monster. I actually stood on one many years ago while it was in Fort Worth TX. I was so impressed with the shear size and the power…

UP’s answer to the power curve question was to mate two locomotives together to form one gigantic one. The net result was the creation of the most powerful locomotive ever built in this country.

Anyway, I love all locomotives in reality. Either in scale or 1:1.

David, that star field behind that locomotive is beautiful. Really beautiful. What a great picture. I stared at it for a few minutes, it was that pretty.

The locomotive is awesome and my compliments.

I am inclined to agree with Bart and Tom and say Shay (any size) but when I look at what I have and use my go to engine is the lowly Connie. There is something about that ugly squat little beast that just screams backwoods NG.

Man, that is a beautiful locomotive period!!!

Classy looking. My compliments to its owner/operator.
