Large Scale Central

How many hours?

It upsets me to hear someone tell us that his layout, or project is “Finished”…why…of course it’s none of my business what that person decides but if…yes If, it is his hobby, then I am concerned. A true hobby grows with a person. It NEVER is “FINISHED”. As soon as a hobby turns into a business, it ceases to be a hobby.

When building a model railroad; when you get it built, you then start to upgrade it, as you learn from your mistakes, and technology changes, you progress with it…you grow with your pike and your hobby grows with you…

You meet new friends through your common interest in the hobby, and share, and learn with them; improving and sharing knowledge and experiences. No competition…everyone is a winner…there are no “Losers” when involved in a constructive hobby, like MODEL RAILROADING.

I get asked that all the time. It’s hard to give even a rough estimate of the amount of time I put into a model, because I’m not “clocking in” to do it, I’m just having fun. That’s the whole point of a hobby, it’s something to pass the time.

No one around here to ask how long I’ve worked on anything!

Gentlemen, I think we’ve inadvertently made a contribution to the world here: we’ve proven Einstein’s theory that all time is relative is correct. Ha!

Yup, that where I am. I don’t clock it, nor put a deadline on it, and I do it to pass the time and have fun. But there are a few projects that I wish I could have made more progress on, then I did in the time I directed to them

deadlines are there when something NEEDS to be finished, otherwise it when I have a spare hour or so I go putz around , sometime that is spent just sitting there contemplating the next phase of the given project, or looking for the “Right” way to do it the first time, or the butt modeling time spent here discussing what we plan to do or researching an idea to the nth degree before starting on it. Still all time spent working on your layout. So is however you want to look at the question and how snarky or nice you want to be if you even answer, do like the ones I have tried to talk to, just keep talking to your buddies.

Yup, I have had projects sit because I was unclear on how to do the next step. Then it hits me, a simple answer to the problem. Usually as I am just about to fall asleep for the night. I used to keep a notepad and pencil by my bed for those flashes of inspiration. But my current dog keeps eating my pencil. The “deadline” projects are usually track or bridge related. If I don’t have working track, I don’t have a railroad. Then I would be like Devon. Most everything else I just putz with. Right now I need to get in the mood to letter some cars. I only have 9 cars waiting to be lettered right now. But I am not in the mood to do that, so I will butt sitt a bit longer. My brain is always wanting to chase the next design problem. And, being limited in time and/or motivation, falters on the execution…

Oh crap, my MIL might be right…

Cliff the problem solving gets me motivated. Its the repetitive tasks that bore me and case me to let things sit. Once I solve the problem, and then have to execute that solution over and over again I tend to loose motivation.
