if you use a charger that is for Li-Ion batteries and get cells with the built in over charge/discharge protection circut you shouldnt have much issue…shouldnt is the operative word. A man you may know or heard of…Bill Canelos…did a rather extensive test and write up that he posted on another board…his experiance with Li-Ion has been pretty good and the artical is very informative …if it is permited and I can find it, I’ll post a link to it or I’ll see if I can get him to repost it here.

Whilst I have a great deal of respect for Bill, he says he solders wires directly to the untabbed cells. That is a definite No No for any chemistry. Welding connections, yes. Soldering to cells, no.

If you must solder it should only be to cells with proper solder tabs.

I have soldered to tabless cells for over 10 years while in the r/c racing hobby…not just NiCad’s and NiMH’s but LiFe, lead acid, and sub c LiIon.

Granted, care must be taken

Me too

When you heat up a cell such that solder will flow and stick, you also heat up the internals. Doing so will shorten the life span of the battery.

Soldering to a welded tab prevents that happening beause the tab heats up and cools quickly.

Sorry…had to do it

cant explain how hard I’m laughing…good one Rooster…sorry Tony…it is funny

I’ve soldered directly to Li-Ions when I didn’t know any better. Since then have done much reading and pay extra for tabbed cells. I also use a heat sink on the tab while soldering. Took a pic last night but it’s home and I’m not.

I solder directly to them, but I sell them to airlines.

Seriously, I directly solder to them when I have to, I usually recycle laptop cells and usually I can preserve a short section of the spot welded tab.

I am good at soldering (taught by professionals) and a hot iron, clean metal, right flux can make a connection pretty darn fast.

That said, I NEVER recommend this to anyone until I believe they can do the same, normally by personal observation.

I put the plug in and charge away. I dont worry about a fire. Think about how many cell phones and computers are charged daily. How many fires have we heard about? As long as you use the proper charger why worry.
