Horovitz No Longer Editor at GR

Back in the early 90’s, I subscribed to ‘Garden Railways’. The 1994 swimsuit issue is still a sought-after collectible. I also use to pick up the latest ‘Outdoor Railroader’ magazine at the local hobby shop until it became ‘Finescale Railroader’. I let my subscription to GR expire in the early 2000’s. I really liked those magazines, not just because of the articles and ideas, but for the nice glossy 8 ½ x 11 color pictures. Those were pre-internet days and the magazine advertisements sucked me into buying many of the latest LGB and USA Trains offerings. Most (if not all) of the train shops advertising limited edition custom run trains back then (Watt’s Train Shop, Depot G, San-Val, New England G Scale, Train Showcase, Track & Trains) are now defunct.

Anyway, regarding Marc Horovitz. I was talking to a fellow train club member recently who told me a funny story of how during a layout open house visit to the Bay Area, Mr. Horovitz was surrounded by a few people who followed him around with their hands up trying to get his attention. Evidently, some club members wanted Marc to visit their layouts and take pictures for the magazine. I guess a few long-time members were a little irritated when they heard about that, but it personified what an important figure he was to the hobby.

Horovitz being ridden out on a rail combined with the reduction in the number of annual issues is definitely a sign of the times. Both for the G-scale train hobby and for the newspaper/magazine industry.

Was that the one with Larry Otis in the gatefold? Awesome shot. Still get nightmares from that one.

Russ Reinberg tried to keep things going after Outdoor Railroader didnt flourish, with Finescale Railroader Quarterlies and then Modeler’s Annuals (Westlake Publishing) and then gave up (b.t.w. it had great super detailed articles ). Does anybody know what happened to Reinberg or to the crew that worked often with him? Or did he completely retire? Where did the contributors go? Were they mostly Southern California modelers? Those were awesome, mostly large scale models done in mind-blowing detail. I would sure like to see more like that.

Russ had his fill of the magazine business. But he still has the Westlake fine scale forums and several of the modelers from the magazine and annuals are there, as well as a few new “faces”:

His forums have some neat build articles, super detailed! His jazz cd is real good also!(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Yeah, Chuck Doan’s work is enough to make you want to commit modelling suicide it’s so good. There’s also some guy named Dunakin over there, but, really, his stuff is kind of amateurish. Uses a lot of sintra I’m told. If he keeps working on it he may be good some day.

Russ and I have had this discussion a few times over the last year or two, including a week or two ago when his name started being mentioned here and on other forums. Ray’s right: Russ has had his fill. But, aside from the treasure trove of forum posts, on the Westlake website there are a number of back issues in digital form of Finescale Railroader and, I believe, all of the annuals. I have bought up all of them, they have certainly held up over time, and I would love to see more of them, especially from the original Outdoor Railroader.

When I joined Russ’ forum he asked me about my modeling experience and was trying to ascertain if I had the “right stuff.” Things weren’t going too well until I name-dropped that Dunakin guy, so I guess he must be pretty good …

In the words of the late Walt Kelly–

That “Dunakin” lad drops in here now and again. He seems like a pleasant chap…
