Hey , don't ignore this , you might be affected

Mike, an acronym looks like a word and can be pronounced - like RADAR - at least on this side of the pond. But BFH are just initials, like the proverbial RCH - something that’s tiny; i.e. you’re just an RCH off. Now there’s gotta be a word for initials that can’t be pronounced - there’s a word for anything and everything in English - but I knoweth not what it is.

Get the sockit wrench was a phrase often used where I worked: if the nut on the end of a bolt wouldn’t budge with an ordinary wrench, you’d ‘get the sockit wrench’. You put a sturdy screw driver against the nut just so, pick up a hammer, get a bead on the end of the screwdriver, and SOCK-IT with a hammer: and if that doesn’t do the trick use a BFH.

Yours for more exacting and exciting English,

Art

Its still an acronym…you pronounce it “BEE EFF AICH” Just like EFF BEE EYE, or SEE EYE AY… Ok ya might call it an an abbreviation too…

A sad reflection on us all , not many of us use the tools forum--why ? Are we so convinced we know how to use them ? OK , here's one to think about . I was checking the settings on my miniature bandsaw , A Proxxon model ,very nice .Now don't rush off if you don't have a bandsaw , you may still find this useful. My bandsaw was out of true , using the slide on it to cut square , it didn't . Or so I thought . After some time faffing about , I decided to check the L square I was using . A build up of crud was giving me false indications ,I checked the square using the trick of drawing a line with it then turning it over and drawing another --it immediately showed the problem . I cleaned up the glue that had dried on it , picked up whilst holding a wet job square for it to set . The crud was less than a thickness of paint . I had boobed . I shan't next time . My saw is now square . Don't assume , check . Mike
Mike,

Rule 1: Keep your tools in very good shape

Rule 2: Use them only for what they’re intended for i.e. a screwdriver isn’t a prybar.

Rule 3: Good tools last a life time when treated properly. One can really save money!

Whaddya mean a screwdriver isn’t a prybar???

Bart,

Just ignore my comment, I know we all have our special ways of doing things.
