Large Scale Central

I agree, for an additional reason, whenever I lie down on the floor those small parts stick right into my skin, so I can locate them by the pain spots. It’s incredibly effective and the cost of the bandaids to plug the wounds is not so bad. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Magnets are fine with steel, but brass and precious metals, not so much.

I don’t use brass hardware, but you are correct on that one.

I made square nuts for a car’s tension rods, once. The brass was much easier to reshape.

Later I got the MicroMark Tap and Die set and it didn’t matter as much.

I wasn’t sure everybody knew

AND I had to beat Cliffy!(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Well, for those parts I have a telescoping rod with a magnet on the end. I carry that in my tool bag and use that at work. At home, I have a flat magnet that I took out of an copier pancake motor. I have a string tied through the center holes, and I just hover that along the floor, or the grass when a ferrous metal part gets lost outside. But for some reason it didn’t help when I lost the plastic roller bearing cap off a set of Aristo roller bearing trucks. Fortunately, Gilbert at GLX did help me in that instance.

I really need a #0-80 tap and die… you sure beat me there John, haha!

I could have used a brass magnet assembling the ore bin corners, but all ended up ok. I was mainly relieved that everything fit.

Today I had some time for the ore gates, and I’m about done with them. Chris, I sure gave the working-ness a try, to the extent that the upper counterweight pulleys rotate fine, and the gates slide up and down in their tracks. But the pinion gears and racks were too tightly designed, I didn’t allow for much engagement, and the paint build-up threw everything off. So I had to clip the packs of all the pinions just to make them fit. So I gave it a try; but I’m happy with just a close aesthetic static approximation.

The upper pulley block and its nut plates on the upper side were hand-painted, since they were glued on and sprayed browns with the “timbers”. For the gate rails, the timbers were masked and the rails / other bits were pre-painted; and I glued the rails on this afternoon, and assembled the other bits to them.

Next sub-project will be the ore chutes. I’ve 3d printed the parts myself, but there are lots of issues.

Now those are show stopper details Cliff (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

OMGram

Editing because sometimes I feel Hollywood is stalking me on the forums.

Re-editing to tell Cliff you don’t need “AN” 0-80 tap and die. You will need several as those things just break while you look at them.

Incredible, Cliff. Absolutely incredible.

Are you going to make your STL files available?

Those look really great Cliffy, nice work. Making them work, only encourages you to break them. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

VERY nice, Cliff.

Bob, How about a “Files” section here at LSC where folks can upload their stuff? I don’t know if there’s enough volume here, but it beats looking through Thingiverse hoping you might find something useful…

Thanks so much guys, y’all made my week for sure. I mean that.

Rooster, roger that and thanks for your OMGram, hahaHA! Mainly I need a die to turn #0-80 threads on a 1/16" brass rod, and I’ll need that for future details. I’ve seen them on Amazon, but if you have better skinny on where to get those dies (cheaply, with decent quality), that would be great.

Hollywood, Bob and Bruce, I’m very pleased you like the results!!

Bob & Bruce, I’m happy to email the files to any LSC friends that want them, just PM me. I’d rather not make them fully public, because someone might put them on Shapeways and say they’re theirs (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Chris, you drove me to at least try to make them functional, so thanks to you, there is better detail. Thanks Brutha!

On a related topic, regarding the V&T conference in Carson a week from now, I was today informed that I may have an opportunity to do my H&N presentation in a main day session. I was originally hoping for one of the informal evening modeling workshop slots, so this would be a much bigger deal, like 1 hour vs. 20 minutes. Talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire… Glad I worked up the basic Powerpoint last week! So I now have a few days to crap my pants, do laundry, and otherwise polish the presentation. Are you saying polish a turd? I think you are way above that analogy.

Well, that’s truly in the Realm of a Butt modeler, doncha think? Hey pal, thanks for taking care of the important details!

Thanks very much David.

My nerves go berserk when needing to do any public thing, long story… I get nervous to begin with; and the stroke I had in '04, and the “essential tremor syndrome” since, haven’t helped. Last year’s conference, I utterly sucked with my flanger presentation, mainly because I couldn’t breathe properly. But they seemed to receive it graciously; and hopefully this year will go more smoothly.

Not wanting to whine, just trying to 'splain the circ’s. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif)

Thanks for the vote of confidence though, I appreciate it!

[edit] Hey John, you bet, very appropriate! (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Well, enough about me, here’s the gates against the bin.

The chutes may or may not work, we’ll see.

Thanks for viewing,

Looking pretty darn good Cliff!

Cliff

Looking really nice, you are going to have a very WOW model here when all done, it is going to be a large focal point on your railroad.

Great Job

Clif, I have the same issue. I do ok when talking to a small group, but when the group gets larger then 3 to 5 people, I tend to get nervous. So, I focus on 2 or 3 people in the group, and talk to them, alternating between looking at one, then the other. So, its almost like I am only talking to those few people and the others tend to fade from my view. That’s what works for me. YMMV
