Hi Eric, yeah, I think I got a little carried away on the pile… But yep, that’s the main purpose in this big base, to support the bin & shed, and register the trestle bents & etc. And via the trestle, with the help of some assembly jigs, this module should (hopefully) plug into the main ore bin of the mine complex. No, I won’t be lasering the terrain. 3D printing, baby!! Nah, just kidding. I’ve got some Magic Sculp to make the terrain, after forming some SS mesh as backing.

Today was gluing and fitting and more assembly. I have to say that I had a total blast…
Here’s the main battleship, all cemented up. It has to survive transport between the shop and layout, and support everything else.
OK, I’ll admit that there was a point yesterday when I had to ask myself, “What the hail were you thinking?!”
But I got over it.
After that big “build” (see Bruce, I’m putting it in quotes (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)) came the superstructure. Here that is, along with some of the many other bits being dry fitted, and the retaining wall planking temporarily in place.

Plus you’re going to use one of my favorite modeling mediums - Magic Sculpt! (It’s Magic!!!) Though I am very curious how well the mesh will work. I am a bit disappointed - I thought you were going to animate this and build up the pile in real time using real materials. At the top of the photo? Probably it was owned by the water flume company, because that’s what it’s parked next to. The flume supplied VC with water (from Lake Tahoe, via a massive “siphon” pipe through the Washoe Valley. I don’t know what the building was for. [edit: actually, it’s probably a holding tank, perhaps for fire fighting or other water distribution purposes].
At long last, I got to building today. Mainly, peeling paper of the plex, then test fitting it. Most went right together, except for the usual percentage of glitches. I had to re-cut 1 big piece (was missing half its slots, sheesh) and 2 tiny ones, so that’s under par for me so far. Some slots were a little too tight (I messed up on the laser focusing). But, that’s what God made Dremel’s for.
So here’s the main base, at the test-fitting stage.
More tomorrow, I hope. But first I need to do some spring yard cleanup. (yay. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-frown.gif))

Jim, Dave, yep, it’s just for wires, as John pointed out. The pipe starts down at the track, where power will be sucked off the rails (for now). It it will feed the audio / animation stuff.

About the terrain…
Here’s what has been my Plan A:
- Cover with SS mesh, fine enough to not let Magic Sculp through, strong enough to hold the shape under the MS weight
- Tie the mesh off periodically w/ SS wire (through an opportune hole in a plex rib)
- Spread a first MS layer (~1/8, to not press the mesh down)
- Spread a second / final MS layer
But, a different approach occurred to me this afternoon… call it Plan B:
- Loop short lengths of SS or copper wire through the rib holes (as foam retainers)
- Apply small amounts of spray-foam into each cell, and let it grow beyond the intended terrain surface
- Carve it all down to the plex ribs
- Add / subtract for best effect
- Coat all with MS (~1/4")
The second approach would give far more support to the MS, and permit much better surface control (especially around the stairs and bents, which will otherwise be quite tricky). It will be messy, but I’m liking it.
Any big thoughts? Letter rip!!

Ah, when you designed the “ribs”, didja design them 1/4 inch under, to compensate for the magic sculpt? I like the foam idea better, although it will be a bit messier. Use the great stuff that doesn’t expand as much, there are 2 kinds, that way you don’t have to trim off as much, and it will be denser, offering more support. I do not know how well the MS will adhere to the foam, so you might want to put score marks into the foam so the MS has something to grab onto. Of course if you are carving the foam, you will already have knife makes in the foam, so disregard my last statement.
