Haitian Sugar Train in On30

Doc, did they have video cameras back in the 1920s?

I really liked the way you abused that poor little Porter, but them chuffs seam a little deep for the small cylinders on that thing.

Steve, they had movie cameras, but colour film was still being developed. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Nawh they had to use that ancient black and white stuff like this:

But a Porter is a Porter is a Porter.

Hi Dave.

It is actually a British 0-4-0 that I was able to find the sound recording of. Thought it wasn’t too far off. Still looking for a recording of a Porter’s whistle…any ideas???

Doc Tom

PHOENIX have a Porter on their sound pages.

But did they have “Talkies?”. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Doc …“once again” I always thoroughly enjoy the history you include with your posts!

Steve yes, yes they did.

Maynard …Steve is just pulling your leg ! He knew that because he had one then .

If memory serves, “Talkies” were not widely used until the early 1930’s. I was there. Yes, “The Jazz Singer” was made in 1927, but that was just an experiment. It was a great movie, too.

This is page three, so thread jacking is required.

I still don’t know how you got talking movies of that 1920s sugar plantation Doc, but however it was done, it was worth the effort.

The Wikipedia view of sounds and movies - Sound film, various attempts until the “Triumph of the talkies” around 1927/28.

Thanks Steve…there is nobody talkin’ in the flick just a funky Caribbean Steel Drum band getin’ down and accompanying the old silent film.

Thanks for lookin’

Dokte Tom (Haitian kreyol “Doc Tom” )

Today, I started some more modeling on my On30 mini layout of the 1920 Haitian Sugar Train.

I have been working on the rural Leogoane section. After the completion of the Rhum distillery I thought I should focus on a little more salvation than damnation.

My good friend Father Andre Augustin is the Pastor of a Parish with outlying Chapels in the area of Ranquitte Haiti. Here are some photos of the St Paul’s Chapel in the Haitian hinterland.

It is a nice simple structure and I have been setting in the footprint of the model I will make of this Chapel with the selective compression I have used on all the structures of this small layout.

Thanks for looking. Doc Tom

Simple can be SOOO interesting in and of itself Doc. Keep up the great work!

Just caught up to this thread and it does not disappoint. You are a master Doc, As you venture away from outdoor trains i hope you keep us up to speed here. Your work is inspirational to me in its rustic detail.

I never get tired of watching this thread. What a great layout Tom. Thanks.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Thanks for the compliments guys. More to come.

Hmmmmmmm…wonder if these On30 trains will count for the 2016 Mik’s Challenge??? A few ideas swirling around in the head after a few drinks of that good Barbancourt Haitian Rum.

Doc Tom

If its worthy of its own category then I think it is valid for the challenge. O is large scale isn’t it. I vote to let you play.

well, i would say, it depends on the pics.

if you go on taking close-ups, it looks big enough… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
