Gee, I thought that was a port hole.

I was at sea too long, I guess.

The thought of opening that “port hole” and seeing Steve Featherkile peering back at me is downright scary!

Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Mark- That ‘thing’ is a water column (stand pipe). Also called a penstock. It’s used to supply water to the tender. Railroads used them in yards (or other places) where there wasn’t a lot of trackside room for a tank.

I think he is referring to that boxcar looking thingy hanging off the end of the tender, kind of blue-gray with reddish stripes. If you look closely, the penstock is hanging off the side of the tender, not the back.

And if you look even closer, the "boxcar thingy" is on the adjoining track ;) Ralph

Ooops! :)

And its an F-unit in CB&Q colors

Whoever said it, they are correct there is a CB&Q 4-8-4 on display at the Colorado Railroad Museum. But I dont know if it is the same class.

I wondered if the extended smokebox had something to do with the environment the locomotive worked in.

I think that’s an E unit. Possibly E7, based on the side windows.

Based on the look of that engine, I’d say teh extended smokebox contains a feedwater heater, and most likely a multiple-valve headend throttle & superheater header. all that stuff takes up some serious space.

Yeah cause on a Engineers side view you can see the throttle right before the jacketing begins

Most of the big modern 4-8-4 types had quite long smoke box fronts including even the SP GS’s.
